Jon Stewart: Barack Obama Makes Elitism the New Liberalism

POSTED BY: TheInDecider

Jon takes a crack at the fallout of Barack's recent comments about Western Pennsylvanians:

Is elitism a problem for you? It's not like Americans have ever held a superiority complex.

  1. Even though I have been a staunch supporter of Obama since last summer, his recent remarks about the culture of western PA disappointed me. Yes, they were incredibly condescending and bespoke a lack of understanding of a huge piece of American culture. Western PA is full of recreational hunters, and hunting is wholesome, family stuff out there. (My parents lived outside Pittsburgh for 13 yrs.) And a halfway smart politician would never, never put people down for being religious. I mean, come on, man. But after seeing The Daily Show last night, I feel better about him again. A presidential leader shouldn't be condescending or elitist – that's not OK. But at least he is super smart AND does have integrity. Can't say that about Hillary. LOVED the Crown Royal jokes.

  2. His comments were taken completely out of context and twisted into a media soundbite for Clinton's benefit. Huffpost has transcripts posted of almost exactly the same ideas used by Bill Clinton during one of HIS campaigns. The idea that economic woes cause people to find comfort in their traditions and their religion is a commonplace sentiment. Obama did NOT disparage hunting or religion. There was no putdown. The notion of condescension and elitism was a Clinton campaign embellishment.

Get a grip people. Put on your mental filters when listening to media soundbites. Hint: they assume you are stupid and supply you with a simplistic interpretation so they can bounce it back and forth for days on end in order to fill their cable news shows.

Sorry but I am so sick of this idiocy going on and on. Talk about handing Republicans enough talkingpoints to last for months on end….
Maybe Hillary really is planning to do a Joe Lieberman. I thought better of her and still hope she will do the right thing if she is still behind after all the states have voted.

  3. I'm getting tired of Jon Stewart's tirades about Obama. Jon, you're not funny, your humor is dull.I'm suprised you haven't lost your show. Must be beacuse of corporate welfare. You're jealous of Obama. You were not even ashamed to call him Hussein Obama during the oscars. You embarrased the attendees. You have been ranting about Obama's dick, do you wanna lick it? Maybe you should hook up with Elton Jon you sore loosers. Your brains is not even 1/4 of Obama's and that bothers the Jesus out of you. Angry white man. Get over it, Obama will be president. Hillary's chances ended with ole MISS. You need a life, get an F.

  4. and actually I think JS has been giving Obama a break and nailing poor Hillary lately. but she's been providing so much fodder for comedy…. as have the cable news shows.

  5. Up until the first week of February, I honestly believed that choosing between Hillary and Barack really was Coke or Pepsi…and then she started the dirty politics. I don't understand how an Ivy League educated politicial insider like Hillary can even feel comfortable using the word "elitist" in a derogatory way. We in the democratic party are different from republicans in that we LIKE elitism. Jon was right…After eight years of C-student government, we NEED a president who is embarrasingly superior to us, rather than just plain out embarrassing to us. I've had an assfull of shot-and-a-beer good-ole-boys…and their panderers.

  6. What's happened, Jon. Gone into the tank for Obama now? Did the corporate media elite moguls get to you and give you a little push into the dark side? Or is Obama giving you a little tingle up your leg now, too?

by Ann April 15th at 1:56PM
  7. Damn Indie Scarborough, not only were you disgusting but did you even watch the clip? Stewart spent most of it roasting Hillary Clinton; it was hysterical!

  8. What if Pres. candidate said:

Those Blacks sure are bitter and resentful because of all of discrimination and oppression. That's why the cling to their Negro spirituals and their welfare programs and keep having babies. And they sure don't like white people or Mexicans or the Koreans on the corner with the grocery stores. And that's why they cling to their conspiracy theoreis about AIDS and syphillus and drugs. And that's why they won't vote for me.

Would that candidates supporter say – that's true?
    Who would be offended?
Would that candidate be bood of the stage and have to go into hiding?

  9. How great it must be for Obama that John comes out against Hillary for the whole first part of his show to make up for Obama's statement about small town PA. It's a man's world.

by janet April 15th at 2:13PM
  10. This is absolutely ridiculous. Obama says something that is clearly innappropriate, and Jon Stewart not only condones it, but spends about five minutes bashing Hillary Clinton for… absolutely nothing.

Clinton may not be as 'inspiring' *Cough-BS-cough* as a speaker, but at least she can get through a full sentence without stumbling over every other word, and has a modicum of knowledge about the issues that the president will have to face.

I don't have a problem with Obama, but this apparent and vomit-inducing bias is absolutely ridiculous.

And yes, Jon Stewart, everyone who doesn't vote for Obama is a bigot, because black people are the only ones who have had to overcome adversity in the past 100 years.
