Jon Stewart: Barack Obama Makes Elitism the New Liberalism

POSTED BY: TheInDecider

Jon takes a crack at the fallout of Barack's recent comments about Western Pennsylvanians:

Is elitism a problem for you? It's not like Americans have ever held a superiority complex.

  1. I spent all Monday afternoon watching CNN contributors blowing Obama's comments out of proportion. It was such a relief to hear Jon point out that Hillary had said and done just as outrageous things; the difference is Barack doesn't use them to fuel a negative campaign! Not only that, but by keeping this in the news the media is missing the fact that John McCain doesn't even know the difference between shiites and sunnis! The Republicans are who we have to beat here. What Hillary and Barack should be doing is present themselves, encourage their ideas, and let the voters think and choose for themselves instead of trying to project a negative-stereotype onto their opponent to MAKE voters think a certain way. It shouldn't have come to the point where Democrats would rather vote for McCain than the nominee who beat their candidate, which some polls have shown.

  2. Obama tells the truth, wasn't even being elitist about it, he just used a word with a negative connotation, if he had said people adhere to their religion in times of hardhips, they resist being seperated from their guns, as the late heston himself once said, and theyview the trade and immigration policies which have cost them their jbs with suspicion no one would bat an eye, yet cling means to adhere to, to resist being seperated from. Its funny that people are bashing him for poor phrasing of the truth.

  3. I don't think it's just about being elitist, it's also that he's a black elitist, making judgemental remarks about white small town america belittling them on faith, guns, and bigotry. His whole campaign got a big shot in the arm when his people spun the Clinton campaign into racism. So now he does the very thing that his campaigners took the Clinton campaign to task for. It's hypocritical and really makes it look like he was listening to those Wright sermons. You just can't lump people into a group and make blanket statements. Especially in this computer age. Even rural people have access to cable, the internet, etc. and are pretty darned enlightened. Coming from small town America, I can say I never lump any group of people together about anything. I remember the Holocaust.

  4. I have been watching Jon Stewart for years and he does seem passionate about this upcoming election but i would attribute that to the importance of our decision regarding the next president. As far as being an "elitist" spend five minutes at almost any college or university, 30 seconds for ivy leagues :-) , and you'll agree that nearly everyone in some facet believes they are unilaterally correct regarding one issue or another, and if people simply acted per their suggestion they would be all the better for it. I live in PA and we have a saying, "In Pennsylvania there's Philly and Pittsburgh, with Alabama in between." Take that for what you will but it is a rather popular saying. This does not mean what Obama said was correct or intelligent given his position. But… there may have been some truth in it…maybe.
    P.S. no offense meant.

  5. If any candidate is truly elitist, it's Hillary Clinton. I think it's hilarious that the woman who couldn't even relate to New Yorkers is now trying to relate to rural, small-town Americans. Personally, I think Obama had a point and being able to spot racism and intolerance doesn't automatically make you a rascist. Just observant. And I'm a white, small-town West Virginian so I think I have room to say that.

On the topic of an elitist president, I think Jon made a good point. Anyone who's going to run this country should be elevated beyond the average Joe, just as long as they're not so far over the heads of the common man that there's no dialogue.

  6. Hope Jon and Steve Colbert will use their fun powers to help our country to escape another 8-year era of hypocrites in the White house, spinning the public and making fat favors to their friends, in exchange for "library donations" and quarter million per hour speech honoraria.
Elitists? NO, this is too good of a word!

  7. Wow, Jon Stewart actually kinda-sorta criticizing Hillary Clinton? What happened, Jon? Did Hillary not return a phone call over the weekend or something? Will you make up for this one transgression on your part by having her on your show the night before the Pennsylvania primaries? Will you make it up to her by returning to your Obama-bashing–the staple of your show for weeks now?

    AND, to Pennsylvania voters:

    a) If you vote based on distorted sound bites about "bitterness," then you deserve to lose your jobs to China, Venezuela, and Columbia (oh, and India)

    b) If you think Hillary Clinton is authentic, a voice for the people, and someone who dodges sniper fire and goes behind sheds to shot at squirrels so she can bring you prosperity and peace, then you deserve to lose your jobs to people in third world nations

    c) If you will vote for Hillary Clinton because you "know" her and won't vote for Obama b/c you don't "know" him (OMG, maybe he is really an alien, a Muslim alien, no less, OMFG), then you don't "know" anything, and you deserve to lose your jobs.

Think about it. You want to cast a vote for HILLARY CLINTON? HILLARY CLINTON? The woman who cites gender bias and right-wing conspiracies and who uses her husband's supposed accomplishments as her own? REMEMBER THE SMUT the Billarys brought to the White House? Seriously. WTF?

  8. Political satire is only funny when it is directed at all candidates equally. This piece was neither impartial nor amusing. Too many more like this and I will expect the Daily Show cast to be wearing “Yes We Can” T-shirts.

  9. I'm usually a big fan of The Jon Stewart Show but I'm becoming increasingly frustrated by his lack of impartialness. He's starting to become the foil of Fox News. I remember watching Stewart when he was on Larry King and it was obvious then that he was no fan of Hillary. Regardless of if you are or not, provide equal treatment and mistreatment of all candidates. Case in point on tonight's show, we got an earful of Clinton's folly but never actually heard Obama's "bitter" sound bite but a paraphrase.

Now with this whole being: "elitist" is good = Obama. Fair, very fair.

  10. My question to jon-stewart-who…Your life's work is What, again???
Excuse me, but no body deserves to lose their jobs overseas. Not me, not uninformed people, not even you!!!Although, we might decide to deport you and force you to work in the slave labor conditions of China or India!!!From your comments, it can be summarized that you are apparently not a social worker or therapist…Maybe you're the alien…the kind with two heads!!!
