Jon Stewart: Barack Obama Makes Elitism the New Liberalism
Jon takes a crack at the fallout of Barack's recent comments about Western Pennsylvanians:
Is elitism a problem for you? It's not like Americans have ever held a superiority complex.
PERMALINK:

Jon;
After watching Monday night's show (April 14th) I've decided to take a break from your broadcast. I understand you need to support the younger, hipper Obama to try to keep in step with that young demographic that your advertisers pay so much for. But I thought that your attempt to turn Obama's elitist comments about Pennsylvanians into an anti-Hillary rant were very weak, at not very funny. And your comments about "Western Pennsylvanians" sounded a little elitist as well. I was neutral in this race and will support either candidate in November, but now I hope that Hillary fights on to the end. So goodbye until the fall….unless I found out in the mean time that Craig Ferguson is funnier than you! (I TiVo)
First…. Please note that this is the 3rd time to attempt sending this… because it keeps telling me to reenter my security code… but gives me no place to ENTER IT.
Now… my comment… Thank You..
I have an idea about the coming election that although not “probable” seems “Possible”’!
It’s apparent that the U.S. is ready for a change….. A Woman president, or a Black president; I think it is a wonderful change that seems to be sweeping across the nation.
However, I had a thought the other day that may put a different spin on things.
Personally, I feel that Hillary should win this one for 3 reasons:
1- I believe that she will bring an end to the war.
2- Having a Woman president would be a good “initial” change that would probably be more generally acceptable.
3- Do people really know Mr. Obama well enough yet? Wouldn’t a few more years in the public eye give people a chance to learn who he really is and what he stands for (in practice… not in promises). And if they want him by the next election, the public will be better informed.
On the other hand….. What if Mr. Obama actually won this election…? Before the troops are back from the Middle East….?
Think of the possibilities….
What if the White Supremist groups are actually working together to elect Mr. Obama?
Wouldn’t this be the perfect time for it?
And then….. If Obama were Assassinated…. Would it matter who actually did it, as long as the White Supremists took the “Credit” for it!!
If the Supremists, Muslims, Special interests, Organized crime, or ANYONE else actually did it… The Supremists only need to say that they did it; and without the troops being home to enforce Marshall Law…. Then the entire U.S. could break out in a frenzy of Hate Crimes… and the Supremists would have EXACTLY what they have been after for so long! A national Race War that would have Black turn against Whites, and Whites against Blacks in a way, and at a level that has never been seen before!

You are the sexier, funnier and handsome little guy I never saw. Love From St Tropez.
Somebody realy needs to answer my question. Was it elitist for my drill sergeant to tell me and all the members of my platoon that there are no atheists in foxholes? Or does it reflect some basic truth about humans and human nature in times of disress?
Or your drill sergeant was just wrong. Look at the grave markers at Arlington. Plenty of atheists are buried there.
Bear,
Had I never been to Arlington National Cemetery, I might feel rebuked by that comment. As it is, the point still stands, though. If the DS was wrong, does that just mean that only aetheists should be offended by Obama's comment? Look past the surface of the comments, what was he really saying? Do people cling to their identities in time of distress?
Atheists would be most offended by it, since it attacking them directly. Those who aren’t atheists would most likely just nod their head in agreement and not care.
People do cling to their identities in times of distress. Politicians (both liberal and conservative) are extremely good at exploiting that facet of human behavior.
Personally, I don’t disagree with anything Obama said in that quote. Read, “What’s the Matter With Kansas: How Conservatives Won the Heart of America” by Thomas Frank. It is one of the most insightful political books I’ve read in a long time and the phenomenon Obama was talking about is the underlying theme of the book.
Call me an elitist too if you want. In this day and age, its tough not to be.
Gotta agree with you about "What's the matter with Kansas?" Insightful, indeed.
What's most disturbing is how Obama is above reproach. It's become almost blasphemy to criticize him in anyway. Kudos to John Stewart for pointing this out in his comedy routine, but he'll probably catch flack for that, just like the rest of us. It's as if Obama has been packaged and sold to us as some kind of diety, when he's nothing more than a junior senator, with a thin resume, who voted present a hundred times at his job.
My Jon did a wonderful job on this segment. Not all Americans are total elitists. When I dreamed that Jon woke up in my bed this morning he was a little surprised how I managed to do that but kinda matter of fact about it. He was a little concerned about being late for work but I am sure if I wanted he would have made breakfast. It sure was a nice way to wake up. I am very comfortable when he is around.
