Who Got the Bump? – Clinton, Obama and Edwards on The Colbert Report

POSTED BY: TheInDecider

As everyone knows, if you are a presidential candidate, the best thing you can do for your campaign is to go on The Colbert Report to receive the scientifically proven Colbert Bump. So which one of our two candidates and one former candidate earned said bump tonight? Lets see how they did.

11:32 – Hillary Clinton took the opportunity to prove that she can handle any crisis, no matter how outside her field of expertise, as long as it takes place late at night.

11:48 – John Edwards delivered the "Ed-Words" tonight by offering his endorsement to the candidate who buys him a jet ski (and also does some other socially responsible stuff). I guess this means he isn't going to announce the unsuspension of his campaign tonight.

11:57 – Barack Obama hijacked the very screen that Hillary Clinton fixed at the beginning of the show. There's got to be a metaphor there somewhere, but I can't figure it out. At least James Brady is no longer on notice.

UPDATE: Our friend Matt over at our sister blog, the CC Insider, seems to think he's figured out the metaphor, but near as I can tell, he's only come up with similes.

  1. Edwards was the funniest, but they all did a fair job for politicians.

Colbert and Stewart are comedians, not journalists. They zero in on whatever will get them laughs and ratings, hopefully while still telling the truth. Obama and Clinton get slammed by both according to what they've said or done. It just so happens the Clinton is getting more attention right now because of negativity. Obama doesn't complain about it – he talks about it, jokes about it, and moves on. He laughed about what happened during the debate. He doesn't beat a dead horse about what Hilary has said or done.

I think Hilary has disappointed a lot of people with the negative tone of her campaign.

  2. It showed how FAKE Hillary is!

How she pretends to be something and do something while she is not and can't!!!

I liked Edward and Barack: they are both authentic!

  3. None of the above. The city of Philadelphia & Ben Franklin got the Colbert Bump!!!Governor Rendell also shared the bump. It was great to see this happening in the City of Brotherly Love & the city of our Constitution!!!

  4. Colbert won.

  5. Uh, Robert Burnt…I'm trying to understand how your mind works. So if I'm excited that Obama finally got the "screen time" that Hillary Clinton received last month, that makes me a pro-Hillary "Lobbyist" with a capital "L"? Are you a shill for sensationalism? Because that makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

By "avenge" Jon Stewart, I meant that Stephen was doing what Jon didn't have the chance to do on March 3rd–let Obama get what Hillary shut him out of at the last minute. And now Jon has Obama booked on the Daily Show the night before the PA primary, so I think it's pretty clear that Stephen and Jon are working to make up for the fact that Hillary got to come on TDS the night before Texas and Ohio.

There is a definite "sense" of pro-Obama bias on these shows; however, Jon and Stephen do (I think) do their best to be true to comedy more than their political leanings…it's just that their sense of comedy is linked to their political position (and, incidentally, to the position of the majority of their viewers). At any rate, I thought Obama (because he looked the better candidate) and Edwards (because he looked the best, period) helped COLBERT win the night.

If comedy is born of truth, then no wonder Hillary Clinton is a terrible comedian.

  7. WHAT ABOUT DR. RON PAUL? HE IS STILL RUNNING AND HAS HUGE SUPPORT! HE IS A TEXAS CONGRESSMAN WHO IS PRO-LIFE, ANTI-GUN CONTROL, ANTI MANDATORY NATIONAL I.D. CARDS (like he said, only law-abiding citizens will carry valid I.D. cards, good for tracking us), ANTI IRS, PRO RETURN TO GOLD STANDARD!

WHY ARE ALL THE NEWS MEDIA IGNORING HIM? Because he is anti big business and big pharma continuing to run our country!!!!!!!!!!!1

VOTE RON PAUL!!!! THE ONLY HOPE FOR AMERICA!

  8. Return of the gold standard! Why not? I mean, who the fuck wanted to be part of the global economy anyway?

    Ron Paul is a moron.

  9. Perhaps more people should consider Ron Paul's influence in this election is more than just about who will be our next President. Dr. Paul has opened the minds of many, educating them about how the Federal Reserve and the private banks control and manipulate our money, and are not our friend. He's educated us on limited-government and how our Federal government is out of control. We already know about how corrupt our government (and the media) are. Dr. Paul speaks truth to power, and that scares those in power. YouTube is your friend. Do a little looking and find his clips, especially from the debates. He was on the Colbert Report and the Daily Show, too.
