Jimmy Carter on The Daily Show Tonight

POSTED BY: TheInDecider

April has been quite a month for Jimmy Carter. First, he drew a lot of criticism for meeting with the leader of Hamas and laying a wreath at some dead guy's grave. Then, he ate a delicious BLT with bacon that was so lean and tasty that you wouldn't believe it. (Not confirmed.)

And now, tonight, he'll be sitting down with Jon Stewart on the Daily Show to — hopefully! — set the record straight about that sandwich. And probably to talk about some other things.

Let us know what you think about his appearance.

Watch the second half of the interview after the jump.

  1. Maggie, I think you hear those things about Carter because Republicans are noisy repetetive idiots. Carter gets blamed for the Iran hostage crisis… because it happened or that he didn't blow the bejezus out of Iran for it. He refused to negotiate with terrorists, plain and simple. People saw that as weak.

Showing the wisdom and foresight that republicans are famous for… Reagan and Daddy Bush seemed to have no problem dealing with terrorists and sold weapons to Iran, Saddam and Bin Laden. They even were nice enough to have the CIA help train the Taliban.

The economy did poorly during his 4 years (it was in the dumper after the Nixon/Ford administration), not his fault but he gets blamed… Republicans worship money so he is demonized for that.

Carter pretty much singlehandedly prevented a war between Egypt and Israel, a peace that stands today. Americans forget stuff like that, sad that we don't give much credit for preventing war.

My other favorite that people seem to forget is that Carter had us on the road to energy independence back in 1977. He saw the danger of being dependant on middle east oil. He took the first steps to start that 'apollo program' for energy independence that everyone today seems to think we need. Carter even had solar panels installed on the White House. Reagan signaled his support for the idea of energy independence by having the solar panels removed shortly after taking office.

So yeah, I guess Carter was an idiot. Personally, I think we could use more idiots like Carter. The good news is that history is showing more and more the wisdom of Carter's choices.

  2. Jimmy Carter knows less about the Middle East than a one year old. He mentioned that the residents of Gaza are being starved to death, but he failed to mention that it is Hamas that is creating this crisis. Israel allows hundreds of trucks of humanitarian supplies into Gaza, but Hamas has been repeatedly stopping the shipments from getting to the people in order to foster international sympathy.

Also, Carter clearly doesn't know his facts. Hamas was on the list of terrorist organizations long before they won the election.

Carter has been bought, and he clearly is pursuing the agenda of his sponsors:
    1. Yahya Bin Laden pledges $1 Million to Carter’s Center in 2001
    2. Saudi Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal has donated $5 million to Carter’s Center through 2005
    3. Saudi King Fahd presents Carter with $7.6 million in 1993
    4. Sheik Zayed of the UAE grants $500,000 to Carter’s Center in 2002.

  3. As mentioned on CNN International by their Mideast correspondent, Ben Weidemann, (and reiterated by Carter in his Larry King interview) an Israeli newspaper poll taken one week before Carter's Mideast visit showed that 64% of Israeli citizens would like their government to include Hamas in negociations with the Palestinians. (Does the author of a previous post think that Israeli citizens also have been bought by wealthy Arab donations?) This is a poll the Israeli government chooses to ignore. If Israeli citizens, living in danger of attacks, are OK with dealing with Hamas then why are we Americans calling Carter every name under the sun because he spoke with Hamas? Are we more knowledgeable about that dangerous and tragic zone in the Middle East than the Israeli citizens who live in it? And why is criticising the actions -or inaction- of the government of Israel seen as anti-Semitic? Israel is a nation among nations which is held to the same standards and laws as others. Criticising a government's policies has nothing to do with a nation's religion. It is shocking to hear from Jews in the US that they feel ostracised by their Jewish friends if they dare criticise the Israeli government's policies towards the Palestinians (while citizens in Israel are more open about criticising their government on this issue). Are we Americans trying to be more royalist than the king? And how much do we really know about both sides of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict? Was Carter one of our worst presidents? How many of our US presidents received the Nobel Peace Prize? He's actually doing something which might bring the 2 sides together to negociate, something our paid politicians who are in office are not doing. You have to wonder in whose best interest the US & Israeli governments are acting if they ignore the wish of the people most affected by this situation (as expressed by this Israeli newspaper poll).

  4. According to CNN today, 82% of those polled said that Jimmy Carter was RIGHT to meet with members of the democratically elected leadership of the Palestinian people. What's up with that??

  5. As a goy who grew up entirely secular and pseudo-Jewish — then married a Baptist — Jon could not have gotten closer to the truth with his observation that Baptist guilt and Jewish guilt are in lock step; even if he did this more as an enquiry.
I may not be fond of Carter, but he was the last of the great presidents — at least in intellect.

  6. We slam Carter for losing in 2000 & forget it was against Reagan, truly a great leader, so great he had a third term through G.Bush Sr.

  9. Good for Carter's talks in the middle east. I think that since Cheney claims he is not part of the "executive branch" ( immune from being questioned by Congress ) then that means Carter has as much right, and probably better credentials, to broker peace ! After all, Carter really WAS the executive branch once !!

What does that make Cheney….( not printable here )

  10. Well Carter is living proof that the good die young, politically at least.

Now we are left with evil in the Whitehouse and it seems he just won't go away!

Likewise in Congress…I think we need to get rid of the lot and start over again…so much so I started a personal site to promote the idea.
