John McCain Attacks Barack Obama, Defends Phantom Voters
In this endless, joyless presidential race, the candidates have been accused of being all kinds of awful things: bad at bowling, cranky, deceptive, warmongery. The worst accusation, however, remains these three little words: out of touch.
And that's exactly what John McCain says Barack Obama is, because Obama has pledged to raise the capital gains tax…
"Sen. Obama wants to raise the capital gains tax, which would have a direct effect on 100 million Americans," McCain said. "That means he has no understanding of the economy and that he is totally insensitive to the hopes and dreams and ambitions of 100 million Americans who will be affected by his almost doubling of the capital gains tax."
Barack Obama insensitive to hopes and dreams? Aren't they his oxygen?
But this thing about hurting 100 million Americans by raising the capital gains tax, now that is troubling. After all, the vast majority of capital gains taxes is paid by the wealthiest two percent of taxpayers. That means that, according to John McCain, there are currently 50 5 billion* people in the United States**.
Impressive. McCain is so in touch with the electorate, he's even in touch with the 49.7 4.97 billion Imaginary-Americans, the majority of which are fantasized to be independents.
And if he can sway their nonexistent votes, that could pay off big for the GOP in Novtembuary.

exCUUUUUSE me, Sen. McShame! Didn't you admit several weeks ago you "know nothing about economics"?
Someone get his bottle of Aricept-he forgets what he says!
McShame attended the College of Eekonomics!!!
If 100 million Americans are 2% of the US population, that would mean there are 5 billion Americans. Still ludicrous since the world's population is somewhere around 6.7 billion, but…wait, does he think that everyone not in China, Iran and North Korea is American?
he is not talking about the people who ARE affected by CGT, but the people who could be. all american homeowners, all 100 million of 'em, will be effected by this when they sell their homes.
f**cking democrats! check your f**cking stats!
Only those that own something that is worthy to sell will be against it and only those that have nothing to sell will be for it. All you gotta ask is that is, WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO LOSE?
To A. Republican –
We do check our facts. More importantly, we check YOUR facts. 100 million Americans? Have you bothered to see where the McCain camp came up with this number?
I'm tired of conservatives who want to site 28 year old information and claim it's just as pertinent now.
Stock is traded in much larger numbers now, with the global economy and internet trading being much more prominent. It has a much higher chance of working in todays economy than it did in 1980.
Most of these "100 million Americans" won't (or at least shouldn't) be selling assets at a high enough rate to be even marginally affected.
Why do people believe this unquestioningly? I once read a statistic that 25% of Americans think they are in the wealthiest 10%.
And I once read that upwards of 72% of Internets-Americans enjoy using statistics to bolster specious claims. Well, I didn't so much read it as make it up. But same diff. It's the truthiness thing.
"Capital Gains Tax" is an Econ 101 truthiness test.
Comm'on people. It's not as if any of us will be selling our useless real estate any time soon. Damn the torpedos! Why the heck not raise capital gains tax!!!
