John McCain Bravely Overcomes His Aversion to Lobbyists By Hiring Them
If there is one thing John McCain is suspicious of, besides a cease-fire, it's a Washington lobbyist. He even says so on his website!
[McCain] has fought for public disclosure of those who lobby lawmakers for a living, and to prohibit them from providing gifts to elected officials. He has fought for greater transparency regarding the official activities of lobbyists, disclosure of those who arrange for lawmakers' travel, and require members to pay full charter rates when using corporate aircraft.
Thanks to John McCain's dogged fight for greater transparency, we have discovered one frequent activity of lobbyists: working for John McCain. Another one bit the dust this weekend, as McCain's national finance co-chairman Tom Loeffler resigned his post. You'll never guess why…
Among Loeffler's [lobbying] clients is the European Aeronautic Defence and Space Co., the parent company of plane manufacturer Airbus. Northrop Grumman Corp. and EADS won a lucrative contract to provide air refueling tankers for the Air Force. McCain helped scuttle an earlier contract in 2004 that would have gone to a competitor, Boeing Co.
Loeffler's firm also has lobbied for other foreign interests and foreign governments. Newsweek reported over the weekend that Loeffler's firm was paid $15 million by Saudi Arabia.
Man. This guy's such a maverick, he gives high-profile campaign jobs to people whose activities he opposes on moral and ethical grounds. Now that's what I call a bold move toward national healing.
