Marvel Universe: Colbert for President — Getting Antsy

POSTED BY: TheInDecider

After Marvel Comics editor-in-chief Joe Quesada announced that Stephen Colbert is still running for president in the Marvel Universe, we decided to follow up by contacting a reporter in that universe for updates on his campaign:

Picnic baskets attract ants, so the Memorial Day weekend tends to be something of a smorgasbord for the tiny critters. But as Stephen Colbert and his camp discovered in Houston late Tuesday morning, a certain species of the formicidae family finds podium microphones and news cameras tastier than roast beef sandwiches.

At a campaign rally in Adkins Park, a swarm of crazy Rasberry ants — red-brown, flea-sized insects named for the exterminator who encountered them around Pasadena six years ago — infiltrated the power breakers and wiring set up for the event, effectively putting the kibosh on Colbert's scheduled speech that day.

"It was very unfortunate," said Mallory Simons, a local Colbert volunteer who had helped with setting up the event. "Mr. Colbert got up on the podium and started talking. But no one could hear him."

Technicians quickly tried fixing the problem, switching out microphones twice before examining the wiring beneath the platform. During that time, several camera operators complained that their equipment had also stopped functioning. A few minutes later, the source of the power problem had been uncovered.

"Thousands of Rasberry ants got into the wiring and shorted out everything," said Bud Melmak, a technician who set up the platform several days prior to the rally. "This particular type of ant eats up anything that has an electrical current running through it. No one knows why for sure."

Though unable to speak to everyone in attendance, Colbert stopped to chat with many supporters before leaving. At one point, he even promised that he would place a call to Dr. Henry Pym — the former Avenger once known as "Ant-Man" — to look into the crazy Rasberry ant epidemic.

  1. My Lovable Stephen, I hope that no one walked out on you! That is the worse thing that can happen when you are in the middle of a set, and so very rude.
