The Colbert Report: John McCain Suspends His Campaign So He Can Fix the Economy

POSTED BY: TheInDecider

Stephen can't think of anything more presidential than suspending your presidential campaign.

Will John McCain help the economic meltdown by returning to Washington, or is he just avoiding the debates?

  1. A lot of people who ran this country as PRESIDENT, as well as their VICE-PRESIDENTS and FOUNDING FATHERS were creationists…What is your point? Apparently you missed the part of the Constitution where people came to America to have FREEDOM to practice their RELIGION as they saw fit. Now you think that someone's religious views should disqualify them from leading the country? And you think religious folks force THEIR views on people? What an asinine, bigoted and utterly contemptible position to take. Thanks for proving once again that believing in evolution doesn't necessarily make you intelligent.

  2. Believing in evolution doesn't make you intelligent, but believing in creation definitely makes you a mindless drone.

  3. A lot of presidents and founding fathers owned slaves too. If a white separatist was running to be POTUS would their advocacy of slavery be off the table because hey, some of the founding fathers owned slaves so what's the trouble?

That is an asinine defense. But since you brought it up..while it might be said that many of the first European settlers came here to practice their religion the vast majority of the so-called Founding Fathers were openly viciously anti-religion and in particular anti-Christian. If you don't believe this you are ignorant of the facts.

Personally I could care less if Palin dresses like an oak tree and drinks goat blood on the solstice as long as she extends that same courtesy to everyone else. It is, however, the running record of the Semitic religions to be intolerant. Despite Jesus' directive to ignore the affairs of the state, to keep focused on loving god and each other and obtaining a heavenly reward, Christians are notoriously, dangerously, predictably invasive.

  4. Seth, can you name a democratic president who is not a creationist? Even your man Barack is one. And as long as you're quoting Jesus Christ, could you reference that for us please?

  5. I don't think anyone should be disqualify anyone from public office. Only the inability to make decision without them. Religion is arguably the most personal aspect a person's life. In a representative democracy, where so many must be represented, isn't it fair to say that someone is misrepresented?

  7. Of course believing in evolution doesn't necessarily mean you are intelligent. Idiots can believe in it. This fact though doesn't in any way reduce the truth of the matter, that an evolution denier/creationist is incredibly ignorant, or stupid, or someone who's truly ok with intentionally blinding themselves and knowingly hypocritically denying one of if not the strongest scientific theories, one that is possibly the most backed up, most ingrained, most consensus bearing, theories in the history of our existence because of dogma. Or they are ignorant AND stupid.

  8. Romolax, So who will you vote for: Obama the creationist or McCain the Creationist?

By the way, that's all anyone has on Sarah Palin? That she's a creationist? I thought so, just conservative haters. No substance.

  9. Johnny Rocket, Nate,

I think Palin is dangerous for her lack of respect in regards to personal liberty. Her offhanded and casual comment about prisoners rights at the GOP convention should have left every citizen of this country frozen in terror. That is just one example… but really thats all I need. Enough said, done deal… something like that should NEVER come out of the mouth of a person who could one day be our president.

All these sweeping new powers of the executive branch that the last administration put in place especially as they relate to the office of the vice president are not guarantee to *poof* away when they leave office. A new standard has been set. The VP is no longer an empty shirt/blouse and one might expect that an ambitious person like palin would be tempted to even expand upon what the last VP had done. (Some scary stuff, look into Dick Army being lied to about pocket nukes.)

To SP supporters in general…(not Nate and JR in particular)
So when you (secretly) hope for a VP that wants to remove books from libraries but is clever enough to cover her tracks and have plausible deniability… (common if she was "just testing" why the hell did she need to ask 3 TIMES and also ask if a picket line would change the Liberians mind! Plus, the one book mentioned by eye witnesses just "happened" to be a kids book about gay couples when she could have just as easily used clifford the big red dog as an example…) be careful what you wish for!

I will defend anyones right to their personal beliefs but If you are amongst the people that want her BECAUSE of her fundamentalist views, and you are hoping that she will use her influence to force them on others… just remember you may not always be the dominant dogma and someday their may be a person wielding that same power but of an different but equally strong beliefs wanting to ban your beliefs and lifestyle.

Someday a person may get elected and inherit all this new presidential power that may not look or think just like you… or may not read the same books! Hell, they may be muslim, jewish, or even an atheist… this IS America after all. Such things are SUPPOSED to be possible by our very nature. They could even be GAY! since there are apparently quite a few closeted gay people in the republican party I see this as a real possibility in the very near future. Hmmm do you want an overly powerful gay president? I wouldn't mind a gay president myself mind you, I just say that in an honest attempt to scare you into thinking about it for a second. : )

The power that GWB has thrown around the last 8 years… Wielded by a pissed off openly gay atheist president.

It can happen quicker than you think… better vote for someone who will work to reset the power of the executive branch, restore our freedoms and protect ALL people not just the ones they like and agree with.

Checks and balances and reasonable people in power please…

by Rational person September 25th at 5:43PM
  10. Rational Person: I fully accept your well written argument. You are a peaceful voice among a crowd of hateful libs (SPs). Freedom is truly for everyone and shouldn't lean towards conservative dogma. We will never agree (conservatives and libs) on things because our beliefs are fundementally different to the core, so we fall into the hands of the majority vote. Lately it's been us, and you're right, soon it may not be (sadly). Please remember that Conservatives have never banned gay lifestyle. They simply define marriage as between a man and woman. To them (us), marriage is a religious event, that's why it occurs in a church. Our religion teaches us that it is for man and woman. Gays want to adopt marriage, but it just doesn't flow with the historic definition and purpose of marriage. Civil Unions are therefore the option. They can make up whatever name for it they choose. While my church teaches that homosexuality is wrong, we are still taught to love them. And keep in mind that tolerance is not always a good thing. It's good for a country to have moral absolutes, not moral ambiguity.
