The Speaker doesn't take office unless both the President and vice-president are both killed or unable to take office. When Agnew resigned, Nixon nominated Ford for VP, when Nixon resigned, Ford assumed the presidency, and Ford nominated nelson Rockefeller to be his VP.
Bob, Actually, the Speaker does not become Vice President. The new President (in this case Palin) nominates a Vice President who then must be confirmed by the Senate. So, while Pelosi would be next in line until the new VP is confirmed, she would not be Vice President.
If McCain/Palin get elected (wait, I just threw up in my mouth a little) Tina Fay will be able to make this a full time gig…

I am worried about Tina Fey. She's too good. I'm concerned she's going to get stuck in 'Palin' mode, and they'll have to ship her up to Juneau to stand in for the absent Governor, at which point she'll have to respond to subpoenas and take all the heat for troopergate, not to mention keep a close eye on the kids. You know how much trouble the little scamps can get in when mom's not around.
