But those with no understanding of history are doomed to repeat it. So, I guess we don't really have a choice if we really want to create policy that will fix the mistakes. You and John McCain keep repeating that lowering taxes to the wealthy would create jobs. Let's look at that. Over the past 8 years, we've done nothing but lower taxes to the wealthy. And jobs? Let's ask those unemployed workers whether "trickle down economics" works. Our nation has lost millions of jobs under the policies that John McCain advocates. And we've gone from a budget surplus to a shocking budget deficit. Other than lining the pockets of some more rich people, this philosophy doesn't work: it's only helped to get us into our current mess. Understanding that it doesn't work is why Barack Obama has crafted a different way forward for this economy. On the issue of being "bipartisan and a leader": Governor Palin and John McCain talk alot about being bipartisan and "putting country first". Yet, in the worst financial crisis of our time, all we have seen is John McCain putting his political ambitions first and doing it in an erratic, unpredictable and unproductive manner. Rather than accepting Barack Obama's offer to come together to support congress and their efforts, John McCain has lurched from position to position, inflated his own role, claimed credit for the passage of a bill that then failed to pass and then, astonishingly, tried to blame Barack Obama for this failure despite the fact that it was his own house republicans who held out for more pork before they'd vote for it. Barack understood that we needed a steady, measured and calm response from a leader, one reassure the American people and would allow the negotiations to move ahead. John McCain, in an 11th hour stunt, tried to insert himself into the process, and ended up making a mess and costing the markets a significant drop. And those ads about Barack "phoning it in"? When John said he was "suspending his campaign and flying to Washington", he was lying to the American people. In fact, he met with a wealthy supporter and did a television interview in New York, where he stayed in an expensive hotel and never flew into Washington until the next day (when Barack arrived as well). He'd had the report from the Treasury Secretary for 3 days and hadn't even read it. This ugly politicking is something the American people are sick of and it is especially shocking during a time of crisis, when the focus should not be on John Mc Cain but rather on solving the crisis at hand. The measured, thoughtful calm that Barack Obama showed in the midst of this - that's leadership we can believe in. WHAT I WISH JOE BIDEN HAD SAID:
