Six Million Questions for Barack Obama and John McCain

POSTED BY: Ethan Ris

The Commission on Presidential Debates wanted to open tonight's "Town Hall" debate to more than just the 80 undecided Tennessee voters who will be present.

So, they opened up the forum to people all across the country, who were invited to use a medium called the "Internet" to submit their own question. The organizers thought they might get as many as several dozen questions, which could then be pared down to a more manageable size.

They got six million of them

At least six million questions have been submitted via the Internet to be asked at the town-hall-style presidential debate Tuesday in Nashville between Senators Barack Obama and John McCain. That’s a lot of queries for 90 minutes, and obviously they won’t all get asked — there will be time for only 15 to 20.

The moderator, Tom Brokaw of NBC News, is sifting through those millions of questions to find six or seven that he might pose. The other dozen or so questions will come from among an audience of about 80 likely voters from the Nashville area who will be on stage with the candidates.

Now, if there's anyone who can read through six million questions and bring them down to seven, it's Tom Brokaw. Fortunately for him, a lot of the questions submitted were repeats. For instance…

* 850,000 asked, "What is your opinion on the economy?"

* 1.2 million asked, "Barack Obama, is it true that you are a secret Muslim?"

* 2.7 million asked, "Are the odds that Sarah Palin will consent to a Playboy spread higher or lower if she is elected?"

  1. I would give my left soul if someone would ask McCain:

Why do so many POWs, MIAs and Vets believe that you have done the following (as stated by a former POW) throughout all your senate career, as a result of your collaboration with the VietCong:

    1. Ignored pleas of POW/MIA Family Members for your political influence in the overall POW/MIA Issue as well as with their individual cases

    2. Verbally abused and physically manhandled POW/MIA Family Members in public and private

    3. Attempted to negatively influence those who testified before the 1992 Senate Select Committee on POW/MIA Affairs

    4. Diminished legislation that gave oversight and protection to the families

    5. Dismantled protection to any future servicemen that go missing.

Please, seriously please, don't take my word for it. Check out any of the links below. We're almost out of time people.

  2. For Anne & Annette,
More specifically, much of the current economic problem is rooted in what is known as the Enron Loophole, legislation snuck into a bill attached to an omnibus spending bill which passed during the lame duck Congress and White House waiting for the Supreme Court to elect W as POTUS. This is the legislation that deregulated energy trades and credit default swaps. Who snuck this gem into the legislation? Why none other than Senator Phil Gramm, R-TX. The bill had several Republican co-sponsors.

This is the same Phil Gramm who recently said we are a nation of whiners, suffering from a mental recession. Personally, I'd like to give him a mental DEpression.

Sure, Bill Clinton signed it. But the Republicans wrote it, or more specifically the Enron lobbyists wrote it and got Gramm to put it in. If you are looking for a single scapegoat, Phil Gramm is your man.

Think about it. This one piece of legislation is responsible for more economic grief and upheaval than just about any other in history. It's responsible for the conditions that created and burst two enormous market bubbles, plunged California into darkness and debt, foreclosed on millions of people who could have owned more modest homes and now own nothing, and is currently washing away the retirement earnings of millions of hard-working Americans like the beaches of Galveston Island in a hurricane.

Thank you, Senator Gramm. You, sir, are a true American Patriot.

  4. Annette,

I think you need to check your sources, and stop listening to Rush Limbaugh…

Yes, Clinton did sign a bill for a TINY bit of deregulation that the Republican run senate wrote (Not dems, as you claim, hence speaker was Newt Gingrich).

It wasn't until right before 9-11 (Coincidence?) that GW Bush and Republican senate signed away almost ALL regulations…

I might admit to an itsy bitsy part of this is the dems blame, but what the repubs did was unquestionably the real reason behind all of this…and the fact that they blame poor people for it is dispicable. It was GWB who said "You can buy a nice house, instead of a lousy starter home". He released Fannie and Freddie from almost all regs.

And btw, those people wouldn't have lost their homes had they kept their jobs….so pfffft.

  5. Please get Palin out of our face. I am an established business woman and I am appaled with her persona. She is a disgrace to woman! And now that the Bailout Pkg was hurried through we are/may go into a Social State. Feel sold out by McCain and Obama.

  6. The fuckin hypocrites get up on stage and shake hands before talking shit about each other, while you and I being Americans bicker and argue about who is right. Last time I checked, they worked for us, so why do they get to have the best medical insurance, use our money how they see fit and you and I have to sit here and listen to how they will "change" things for our good. We're fucked either way so…

    Just curious.

  9. I would like to know why its not such a big deal that Sarah Palin's husband was a member of a "domestic terrorist" group in Alaska until 2002? The leader claimed he was an Alaskan, not an American…and that Alaska be seceeded from America, and over his dead body would he ever be buried under an American flag…..

  10. Mccain had some really good gaffs during the campaign. I think it was reflective of his senility and blatant fakeness. The only thing he stood for was Bush's aristocratic corrupt policies. Bush looted the treasury, profitted from an American tragedy and created an Orwellian society in which the media has turned into a neo-nazi propaganda machine. Bush brought fascism into the 21st century with his merging of corporations and the government. Finally the world may have a chance to exist longer than another few decades. Perhaps the world will exist for another hundred years and perhaps Obama will restore America's credibility and restore some level of peace in the world.
