Election Day

We know that November 3, 2009 isn't a real Election Day. But still, we can all pretend. Right? Take a look at these six elections and let us know how much you care.

Alaska Panel Finds Sarah Palin Guilty of Douchiness

POSTED BY: Dennis DiClaudio

So, remember that Troopergate business that was kind of haunting Governor Palin's first few weeks of VP-nominationhood but was ultimately mostly overtaken by her obvious ineptitude?

It's back, and this time it's looking more potent

A legislative committee investigating Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has found she unlawfully abused her authority in firing the state's public safety commissioner.

The investigative report concludes that a family grudge wasn't the sole reason for firing Public Safety Commissioner Walter Monegan but says it likely was a contributing factor.

This might sound bad like a bad thing for a U.S. governor/vice-presidential nominee, and it probably would be for any other.

But for Sarah Palin, it really just reinforces her reputation as a maverick. Assuming what she's mavericking from is the law.

  2. My aerobics instructor has spunk too but I don't want her to potentially be the next president of the United States. Wake up–this isn't American Idol or Dancing with the Stars we are talking about here. Palin is so woefully underqualified in every way that it is preposterous that she could be running for the second highest office in the country. Her vindictiveness and nastiness aside, I shudder to think that there are people out there who think she is actually a viable candidate. It just goes to show how unenlightened many Americans are. How did we fall this low?

  3. @mary-m, I'd been thinking about the trooper and whether one can assume he was guilty of the charges of violence and roguishness without a lie detector test or something. I can relate to someone trying to protect their family, but when you are in a government position like Palin, you have to rise above personal vendettas and do the right thing. That's why she was called out on her behavior as well as her husband's. When someone is treated guilty before proven innocent (Wooten), you're setting a dangerous precedent. That, in addition to inciting violence in campaign rallies, she has shown herself to be unfit for office of any kind in my opinion.

  4. Oh, and another thing. I have the feeling government agencies have been forcing employees out if they want them out, and this is just the tip of the iceberg. If 'they' don't like you and want you out, they will find a way through coercion or trial by fire if necessary. I know this for a fact. The only reason this has come to light is because of Palin's whitehot spotlight and there's good reason to look at government and their wicked, wicked ways. The last eight years has been a disaster in more ways than one. The Bush administration has given permission to those in government positions to subdue and ruin people if they don't comply. It's gotten really, really ugly and it needs to change.

  5. Let's see, our country is experiencing the greatest financial and economic turmoil in our lifetime and we are facing threats from around the globe and the best we can hope for is a candidate who has spunk? To Ginny Clark and the other Sarah-lovers out there lets set the bar a little higher this time. We got "W" because he seemed like the kind of guy Joe Sixpack would like to have a beer with as opposed to Gore who was "too stiff and boring" and Kerry who was too "intellectual and unexciting" and now look where we are. We are coming off an eight year run with the worst president in history and unprecedented economic and world crises and you want a candidate with spunk??? How about we try intelligence, integrity, fairness, honesty, balance and some sophistication for a change? Palin ain't got it. Obama embodies all of the above. When he wins he will be inheriting a quagmire but I would rather have him lead our nation than face the potential of that other one–the know nothing, vindictive, disingenuous, duplicitous, irrational, provincial Palin–being the leader of the free world.

  6. Shame on you Sarah Palin. You are a disgrace to your position for taking advantage of tax payers money to fire someone for personal revenge and let your first dude do the dirty work. Stand up like an woman and resign your positions. You are a loser to the Republican Party.*

  7. At this point I have to reiterate: the important point is not Palin's acts as much as McCain's judgment.

He selected her knowing that troopergate was on the way, amongst other things that may or may not reflect badly on her character. If McCain doesn't give a rat's ass about such things in his VP choice, then what does that say about his judgment and character? Focus on McCain, not on Palin.

  8. some of the pro-palin people below should understand that this whole thing does not just boil down to the sarah palin herself wanting to fire her former brother-in-law. she also was responsible for canning walt moneghan, who had done nothing wrong except choose not to be part of palin's personal vendetta. THAT is a misuse of power.

but really, can we expect anything better from a governor whose whole cabinet went to her own high school? i'm exaggerating a bit, but the point is that she is extremely unprofessional and does not behave the way a leader or a civil servant should.

oh, and she's kind of ignorant too. but you probably like that.

  9. Palin's behavior and lack of integrity, experience and ability are relevant for two reasons: (1) She refects poorly on McCain's judgement and highlights the fact that he would rather win an election at any cost and (2) There is a very real likelihood that she could become the President of the United States due to his age and poor medical history. Those people who don't address the Palin issue are giving McCain a free pass on his self-serving lack of judgement. I suspect there are a lot of Republicans who are turning a blind eye to the preposterous notion that Palin could be the U.S. President. I actually don't think McCain would be that terrible as President but I shudder to think that Paliln with all of her inexperience and baggage could potentially become leader of the free world.

  10. From an Alaska…an independent who isn't impressed with either McCain or Obama.

This "investigation" is nothing. Palin has been a good governor period. This Monegan thing was a joke up here; the few people who do not like the governor went after her on this lame claim. Check the public record on Wooten. The governor could have replaced Monegan for anything.

Alaskans know what is going on – from the Russian proximity and "airspace" that idiots in the media have run with – (someone ought to look up the number of times Alaskan bases have scrambled jets to intercept Russian Bear bombers in US airspace), to the concept that to drive out of Alaska to get to another state, we need a freakin passport because we are located next to no other state…we are surrounded by foreign countries. Yeah, and we aren't down by Baja Mexico like in the maps all show down there. We are so big we are 1/5 of the Lower 48. Study geography will you? The media had a chance to finally educate Americans about Alaska, but they were too busy trying to punch Palin out as quickly as possible by making her "dumb" with their editing and questions about what newspapers we get up here in Alaska. Couric was sure objective during her interviews wasn't she? What hard hitting questions. We get the Internet up here Katie. The Internet has access to a lot of newspapers on line Katie. Lots of newspapers are syndicated too, with AP stories throughout them Katie. What a dumbass question. Makes anyone normal wonder about Couric and what she is doing asking hard hitting questions like that, even us backwoods Alaskans (or is it us backwoods Alaskans…yeah try to find something to pick apart so you can categorize me…then you don't have to listen). I was glad to see our governor just treat the question for what it was – another Couric slam. Katie must be trying to go down in history…as what I'm not sure.

That morning in Ohio when Palin was introduced was so funny. The media was tripping over themselves. I love that the media was caught with their pants down and their mouths open when they didn't get to "vet" the governor properly.

What part of the government is the media? I thought there were only 3 branches. When did the media become so important? They assigned that to themselves. The media had the long list of VP's but they didn't check Palin out ahead of time – then they get to use the excuse that she wasn't "properly vetted". When did they make that one up – "properly vetted"? Yeah, it was in the late 80's early 90's but I don't remember voting on the "vetting process" as part of the election process.

So from the first speech at the convention when three commentators mentioned that Palin's speech was written for her – yeah…no other politician does that? – until this the media has been very objective. Yeah, and we don't have an Alaskan glacier bigger than RhodeIsland. Obama's famous speech at the Democratic Convention years ago – no one helped him on that? Give me a break.

Most Alaskans truly are independent or we wouldn't be here, and we are entertained by the joke the media has become. I watch MSNBC and Fox for laughs. Fox tries to be even, but they aren't as close as they brag about. MSNBC is an Obama field office. What is the deal with Rachel Maddow? Is it just me or has she tried to look more feminine since Palin came on the scene? More makeup anyway..lashes? Pretty entertaining. Olberman…what a crackup! Did that guy get pounded on the playground as a kid at recess on a daily basis or what? What a nasty little bitter flake he has turned out to be…and they pay him for that?

We have a lot to do up here in Alaska besides watch TV, so I am sure I'm missing a ton of other entertainment from the media. Another Obama supporter just mentioned that our "big" paper, the Anchorage Daily News sure doesn't like Palin. Pretty sad how 85% of the state thinks the governor is doing a good job, but the folks in the city, Los Anchorage (the best thing about Anchorage is you can see Alaska from there) on the staff at the Daily News are doing their best to keep up with the other media goof offs.

Man, why don't they do their jobs? If I hear a one more sound bite on the news showing Obama talking about FDR and how he would handle this financial crisis we are in now, I might vote third party for…anyone.

The media would have pictures of FDR in his braces or in his wheelchair if he were president today. The press would butcher him..especially if he had had views different than they, the media who have appointed themselves the 4th branch of our government.

Let's give actors more media time too during the elections – they are great examples of experience in government and excellent life judgments as far as their personal lives…yikes.

Palin knows who she is. Most real Alaskans are very good at knowing who they are. You can't commercial fish in the kind of weather and big seas we have here, fly in a small single engine plane over real wilderness, or any one of the thousands of true outdoor activities this place offers without really finding out who you are. I have to hand it to Palin, she is a tough Alaskan woman – doing tough things that most people in the Lower 48 would be terrified to even try. I have to also say that McCain has also hung it all out there as a pilot, and a prisoner of war. Those two are tough. Biden dealt with the family deaths…Obama hasn't shown me much more than a very smooth politician. I hope he will have good advisors, but then I'd hope that with any president.

I'll vote for Obama – but the media is nuts. 75% is basically a branch of Obama Headquarters…let the guy win fairly. It has been an embarrassment. Pretty sorry you guys are such a "tool" of the classic media in America. Slam one side…highlight the other. It isn't what you ought to be doing. SNL has great skits – and they tend to slam both sides. Why don't you try it?

Well, since we have 17 of the 20 highest mountains in North America here, I think I'll head out into some of the local ones.

    An Alaskan

PS One last thing. We are all dumb up here in Alaska and it is a horrible place to live. It snows year round. So you wouldn't like it here, so you should stay in the Lower 48.
