The Colbert Report: David Gergen Tells Sarah Palin to Rein It In

POSTED BY: TheInDecider

Political analyst David Gergen says personal attacks are not the way to win an election, and Sarah Palin's recent rallies are especially detrimental.

Are Sarah Palin's angry rallies hurting John McCain's campaign?

  1. Hey, we don't need any hobbits from The Shire telling us we suck big time. Besides, I thought Mr Baggins lived in New Zealand these days. I begin to wonder if you are who you say you are. hmmm.

  2. My man from the shire is right. The rest of the world thinks we suck. Whether you think we do or dont, our government has dropped the ball with damn near every issue over the last 8 years and thats undeniable. The war in Iraq was for oil. If you forgot we went to war to find Osama Bin Laden who is the real terrorist threat that we need to worry about, not Obama. And Bin Laden is definetly not in Iraq. We have spent so much time, effort, money, and young peoples lives for an energy source that we have became so dependent on like a crackhead who cant kick the habbit. We import almost 70% of our oil when we have the means, and people smart enough to produce and sell alternative fuel sources. There is a company in New Hampshire that has created ethanol from grass and wood chips!! You dont see our government giving them any of that bailout money do you. Thats because we the people have elected such dumb asses into office that are easily bribed by the oil companies lobbyists. So, don't get upset when someone says America sucks because as far as our government's representation of us, we do suck. That doesnt say anything about individuals that actuallu care and try to make a difference for our country, but at the end of the day our government's actions represent us as a whole and they have fucked up tremendously. People who purposely go on blogs and talk forums to make irrelevant and hurtfull comments towards other people who have valid points and opinions only make us, as Americans, look just ass childish and ignorant as John McCain and that half a retard Sarah Palin. If you have nothing insightful to say then just please stay quite. Your only adding fuel to the fire but I guess thats a hard thing not to do for a white trash redneck racist that blindly supports McCain, Palin, Bush and the rest of the damnned republican party that has sold America's sould to the devil for a few lousy cans of oil. We need change in everyway. If you werent aware, our country spends more money on building and maintaining prisons than they do on schools. Our tests scores are among the lowest in the world and people like you are a great representation of that. Its really sad………if any of you are interested in hearing some really intelligent and thought provoking stuff, google or search on youtube for Tim Wise and hear what he has to say about "white priviledge." Its astonishing. Peace

  3. I just don't think hobbits should be throwing any stones, these days, no matter how accurate their aim. Look at The Shire's dismal international relations record. They have had a consistent policy of parochial isolationism, and refused to back our allies in the last several wars. Ok, so they sent 4 lousy troops to fight in the last big war, and I admit that they played a key role, but let's face it, The Shire has been getting a free ride, security-wise. And, they have an outdated agrarian economy. It's time they participated in the international economy, now that they've quelled their domestic violence problem.

  4. As far as our standing in the world, we have certainly fallen very far. I remember in high school when I hosted a German exchange student and she was sooo happy to get the opportunity to visit America – The Land of the Free. It was much the same two years later when I went to Germany and stayed with her family, everyone was interested to meet and hang out with the Americans and I had a great time.

Then came 9/11, and everything changed. In 2005 I did a summer semester abroad in northern Italy. During this trip I traveled to several countries in the region including: Switzerland, Germany, Holland, England, and Slovenia. While people were (mostly) still open and friendly towards us, once we got to talking the conversation was nearly always directed towards the war, their loss of interest in America, etc. We've lost our standing as being the "beacon of light" the world looks to for guidance – and I for one, am quite saddened by the whole thing.

One thing I feel certain about, 4 more years of the same thing is not going to improve our standing one bit…

  5. I have so much respect for David Gergen. I agree with Gergen McCain should put a muzzle on his pitbull. I will take it a step further and say that McCain should stop his snake-eyed wife from slithering on the stage and hissing her lies.

  6. I couldn't agree with you more…

  7. In my opinion David Gergen gets an A+ after his appearance on Stephen Colbert's show. He is hereby promoted from "CNN bobblehead" to thoughtful commentator.

  8. Patrick L.,

Did you send that letter? If you do, I applaud you for that. I too have thought the same about them. I was only proven correct after witnessing these last couple weeks worth of (klan) rallies they've been throwing. If your letter were a petition, I would be the first to sign

  9. Neither McCain nor Palin have had the nerve to call Obama a terrorist, but the actual terrorists, the Democrats, know how to twist anything, take anything out of context, for their own benefit and then claim that the opposition is being "too negative." However, McCain/Palin have a point to think about – the old adage, birds of a feather fly together. Look up "You Tube Obama The New Party" and you will see what I mean – a frightening scenario. You Obama acolytes – you really know nothing about your beloved savior.

  10. annette you must have loved bush to speak with as little intellect as he does. birds of a feather FLOCK together stupid. maybe mccain and palin haven't said he is a terrorist because he's not. what proof do you have? none, you're speaking as most republicans do, out of your ass.
the only terrorist link is ayers but mccain has his own ayers, lindner who as late as 2001 supported terrorists directly and threw mcain a fundraiser which is all bill ayers did. try being informed instead of just opinionated. oh and here's MY proof
