Is There a Fey Effect?

POSTED BY: Matt Tobey

Following up on Sarah Palin's ratings-grabbing SNL appearance, CNN has a report on what's being called The Fey Effect, a phenomenon whereby Tina Fey's startlingly accurate impression of Palin actually costs the GOP ticket votes…

Well, that's certainly unfair. I mean, if not for Tina Fey, America would surely see Sarah Palin as a sharp, experienced, well-spoken, non-polarizing person.

So when the Obama administration forces your kids to read The Communist Manifesto in NAMBLA class at their Madrassa, remember to blame Tina Fey.

  1. Clearly we can all see that Palin in NON VP material. Right? The Emperor has no clothes, everyone. Right?
Our country is on the brink of disaster and do we really want someone from Romper Room at the helm? GET REAL!
We need intelligent, evolved, articulate, wise, informed, calm, higher-consciousness beings at the helm.

I truly cannot believe what I am witnessing now during this campaign. Are Americans really that dense?

  2. Wake up America, people are making their political decision based on what they read on the internet and in their emails. Obama…..is a terrorist and a radical Muslim.

Tina Faye is probably smarter than Sara.

  3. For all that I may dislike and disagree with Palin's views on a lot of issues, I do appreciate the fact that she's willing to laugh at herself allow us to laugh at her in a format like SNL. Having a sense of humor about yourself is a good trait for anyone to have, IMHO.

That said, I still hope she doesn't end up as the VP.

  5. If it helps Obama win, I'm all for it. Having that nitwit Palin a heartbeat away from the presidency scares the hell out of me. Recently she was unable to define the roll of VP. And she misdefined it by saying she was IN CHARGE OF THE SENATE!!! Scary! Very, very scary!

What is wrong with this country? How is this race even close? Or is it?

  6. Dear Lindy,

Sarah Palin believes in equal pay for equal work among women; she believes in giving YOU the benefit of keeping more of your money-because YOU know how to spend or save that money than the government does.

She believes that parents should have the choice in education about what schools their children attend and she took on the chronies in Alaska and emerged victorious. She is intelligent, can laugh at herself, has integrity and is articulate.

There are so many more crucial issues that our country faces and yet the media would rather focus on Sarah Palin's: WARDROBE?

Entering the national stage she had to have some clothes, as she'd been working in sweats at times and shopping at consignment stores. The clothes are NOT hers to keep, they will be given back or to charity. However, the media chooses NOT to mention this fact.

Other candidates have had years to build up these 'wardrobes,' as they've had to had them in Washington. In Juneau, I'm guessing the "dress code" isn't the same as Washington, DC!

  7. Folks who are better-educated, more intelligent, and more articulate than Sarah Palin are saying she isn't ready to be vice-president. An astonishing number of those are Republicans, such as Christopher Buckley and Colin Powell. Rather fair indictment, I'd say. And I don't care what she wears. I DO care how she clothes her mind. So far I'm unmpressed.

  8. Oopsie. I meant to type "unimpressed."

by Desperatevoter October 26th at 1:17PM
  9. No. I will always defend Sarah Palin. That woman has potential to totally rise to the occassion. In that respect, she towers over Barack. Then again, I think we can all agree, so did Hillary.

You short sighted, envious, and VICIOUS dteractors are part of the problem, not the solution, for women. Don't, for one second, think I don't see through YOUR ignorance. Too bad. FUCK YOU!

You just don't like her beliefs, her lifestyle and you spin it like patriarchal, male chauvanistic spiders.

Hey, let's do something new and different. Let's discuss the real next president of the United States- Joe Biden.

Sarah Palin is a distraction from what we really need to look at.

  10. Okay, are all Palin supporters STUPID? Do they really think that Obama is NOT for equal pay for women?
"Choosing what education your child gets"… yeah, you can teach them evolution or you can just tell them what god did (According to a really old book written by men).
If you don't know why people focus on her WARDROBE, you are retarded. It's not the fact that she wears pretty things, it's the fact that she used $150k of the CAMPAIGN'S MONEY to buy them. Specially when McCain was the one that passed the law saying that shouldn't be done! It's hypocrisy and if you can't see that, you don't deserve to vote.
And since WHEN do you give clothing of THAT quality to charity? The only reason they said that is because they got called on it. If they spent 150k on cheaper clothes, it would've been MUCH more effective. (Also, are they gonna donate the price of the makeover? How do you transfer that to goodwill?)
Also, and this pissed me off when I read it more than once:
Being able to laugh at yourself is NOT a quality that helps you be vicepresident. No, it is not. You do NOT want someone like you on the leading roles.
The only reason Tina Fey is gonna cost them votes is because her acting is so like the ACTUAL Palin. It's funny because it's true. She doesn't know jackshit about being vicepresident and tits =/= leader. That seems to be the issue. If you're against her, you're a mysoginistic asshole. If you like her.. well, you're an idiot, basically. Yes yes, I don't like her because of her tits! That MUST be it! Not her complete lack of respectable experience and knowledge about politics or responsibility.
You know how you can tell she doesn't actually know anything? The fact that she doesn't give interviews, and, when actually asked things, she evades the question. ANYONE that wanted to prove they're ready for vicepresidency would jump at the opportunity. She doesn't.
(Also, the anchors get the separation between reality and fantasy. Voters don't. THAT IS THE ISSUE. God DAMN both sides are STUPID.)
