Stingy Russian Ambassador Won't Help John McCain Out with a Few Rubles

POSTED BY: Ethan Ris

John McCain was already steamed enough at Russia for ungraciously being in the sightlines of Sarah Palin's deck. Now they had to go and really piss him off!

By refusing to make illegal contributions to his campaign.

Turns out that Team McCain sent a fundraising letter to Vitaly Churkin, the Russian ambassador to the United Nations. Churkin, clearly not knowing what was good for him, declined to make a donation…

"Please know this — we will not concede any region to the Democrats," the letter states.

The Russian mission issued a statement saying "we have received a letter from Senator John McCain with a request for a financial donation to his presidential election campaign. In this respect we have to reiterate that neither Russia's permanent mission to the United Nations, nor the Russian government or its officials finance political activities in foreign countries."

It is illegal for an American political candidate to accept campaign contributions from a foreign government. "It was just a mistake. We don't solicit folks who can't give," said McCain-Palin spokesman Brian Rogers. Asked whether there were any other ambassadors that they planned to solicit, Rogers laughed and said, "I hope not. Maybe we'll find out tomorrow."

Ha ha! That's a hoot. No word yet on whether Team McCain is laughing quite so hard about the seven fundraising letters they sent to Jesus II.

  1. "Russian foreign policy is clear. As seen in the days of the Sovjet Union and – lately – in Georgia, they do not finance, they just send troops." – Madayar

Maybe they'll help the real America break away from the fake American.

That said, I really wish the spokesman said something better than "Oh… We didn't know he couldn't give out", when apparently the issue isn't just Russia's foreign policy, since it's also illegal for a campaign to request funding from a foreign power(Seriously, Russia?! What were they thinking?).

But then, I'm guessing the McCain campaign team is built entirely of mavericks. People who are not afraid to go against the law, even when it conflicts with the ideals spoken by McCain(After all, he's old… Who cares what he thinks?).

  3. What a joke. John McCain cant even rustle some Russian pockets for money. That is why instead, we should vote for John McClane and Hans Gruber 08! John McClane will grab Putin by the balls and order some money from him

  4. Russian foreign policy is clear. As seen in the days of the Sovjet Union and – lately – in Georgia, they do not finance, they just send troops. McCain should've known. Also, Russia will have to face SEVERE consequences in the financial and economic crisis going on worldwide and thus cannot finance any foreigners unless all bribes to government officials and hitmans against critical journalists are fully paid. And they might run out of oligarchs to disown and imprison soon, so they are running short on funds themselves.

  5. xfctr, are you really for Chuck Baldwin? He's an incredibly reactionary right-wing radio preacher … not that there's anything wrong with that, but is that who you want as president? You should check out the facts before jumping to conclusions.

  6. Makes sense, we are financing the US military with loans from China so why not neo-con campaigns being financed by money from Russia? Maverick moment right there.

  7. if john mccain is so desperate he needs to beg the lousy ruskies for their communist currency, then i am done with him. we should be isolating the bear, not groveling to it. and you know khrushchev would have had that palin bimbo shoveling rocks in siberia before she could pop out another ugly kid with a hippie name. what an embarrassment. chuck baldwin for president!
