The Daily Show: Nancy Pfotenhauer Says There Are Two Virginias

POSTED BY: TheInDecider

If small towns are the real America, then cities like DC and NYC are the ground zero of fake America.

Even though John McCain may lose the election, he'll still be president of "real America." Do you agree with Photenhauer's reasoning?

  1. cj said below: "You are portraying 'the rest of America' as a bunch a ignorant hicks and religious fanatics. …. This 'us vs. them' mentality is exactly what's wrong with this country."

cj, what the daily show is doing here is called "satire". What you missed is: they agree with you!

  2. Love the 'Real America' episode. The Daily Show is about the only TV we watch these days here in Newbury, West Berkshire (that's 'bark sheer, ok) Like John Oliver we don't recognise the declaration of independence here, so Bush and his successors are irrelevant. God save our, and yours, (powerless) Queen and congratulations to Prime Minister elect Obama.

  3. If I'm not from the "real America", then do I still have to pay taxes?

  4. Although this Nancy lady really sucked at explaining herself, maybe if her answer was clarified it might make more sense. From what I've heard, theres the (relatively small) part of Virginia around D.C. (northern Virginia), & then theres the rest of Virginia (the… real, Virginia… i guess…). See, my understanding is that the two Southern states known for people having especially good manners are South Carolina & Virginia (my dad is from SC & im from GA). my mom had an experience in D.C. in which she was obviously pregnant w/ either me or my bro, & she wasnt offered a seat on a bus or train when she needed it. her overall experience of D.C. was that people there dont have manners like they do in Virginia & SC (shes from NC & lived in SC when she was in high school).

  5. The problem is that if there is more than one Virginia, then there has to be at least 100! I've lived in three parts of the state (Colonial area, southwest and Northern) and all three are "different". Notice I said "Colonial area" that's because it is different from Tidewater, which itself isn't internally consistent (VA Beach, Hampton, Suffolk, Newport News . . . all different). Nor is Richmond like any of the other parts of the state. It gets even more variegated as you get to what I think she meant by the "real" VA. Danville is nothing like Blacksburg and Blacksburg is nothing like Floyd or Radford (two nearby towns), it becomes even more different as you get towards the union coal worker stronghold of Grundy (Buchanan County) near the KY border. As a current resident of Northern, VA, I must admit that people here make Photenhauer's statement a lot and they could not be further from the truth (Northern, VA is not even internally consistent).

  7. mr. stewart:

i saw your comments…. i'll tell you what, you beat all! you know that? for years now, you have done or said anything and everything about everyone…. no holds barred and all in the name of comedy… but, what gets me is that now you want to put on this "fake offended" act over sarah palin's comments…. you know after all these years of degrading comments from you (aka your so-called comedy) about other people, i would think you would be able to "take it" from someone else…. guess not… quit whinning little man…

  8. Every wonder why Ms. Pfotenhauer always wears a turtleneck? Her neck is as long as a goose, almost as long as her nose gets when she starts lying. Disgusting right-wing bleach blonde with bankrupt ideas.

  9. lol@ marilyn patton. So if I make degrading comments I lose the right to be offended when others do so to me? Hmm…you also tell him to "quit whining" and to not get offended by this when you yourself are getting offended by his response.
