John McCain Sucks Up to Iowa

POSTED BY: Ethan Ris

Well, say what you like about John McCain, but at least the man has a solid core of principles. I mean, if he takes a stand on an issue, he's going to stick by it, right?

Wrong! Take for example, ethanol. For decades, McCain has steadfastly opposed any government support for production of the biofuel, which is made from corn grown in flat, Midwestern, Protestant states.

Like Iowa, which is where McCain was campaigning yesterday. And by campaigning, I mean shamelessly pandering to voters by turning your back on your own principles:

"On the subject of ethanol, my friends, I will open every market in the world to the best products in the world, and that's the American agricultural farmer and worker," said McCain at a rally at the University of Northern Iowa attended by about 2,600 people…

In 2003, McCain told Fortune magazine that "ethanol is a product that would not exist if Congress didn't create an artificial market for it. No one would be willing to buy it." He said in he doubted ethanol would reduce fuel consumption, improve air quality or do much to increase energy independence.

Barack Obama has been a fierce supporter of ethanol in his time in the Senate, largely owing to his constituents in southern Illinois who make a lot of the stuff. But it may also have something to do with his big victory in the Iowa caucuses and the fact that he is currently leading McCain by 13% in the state.

In other news, McCain stopped by Ohio to say that he now hates NAFTA and Vermont to say that he is now a socialist.

  1. Alec Martin has channeled the Founding Fathers, claiming to know their original intent in writing the Constitution, at least that beyond what is actually written in the document. How does one acquire this transtemporal extrasensory ability to commune with the dead?

  2. Ethanol and biofuels are not as important as changing the Constitution.

For those of you who missed it- here is an interview by Barack Obama from 2001- Seven years ago, he outlined outlined his plan to "spread the wealth around" by changing the Consitution via the Supreme Court.

    Here is the YouTube link:

He wanted to "spread the wealth around" then- and now-if elected- he will have the power to change the face of The United States Supreme Court and re-write the Constitution to change the original intent of The Founding Fathers and help special interests. "Spread the wealth around" to inner cities with community organizers.
Same radical ideas that he and Bill Ayres – tried – and failed at a local level.

Take a good listen people- this is what we are all "in for.
    He IS a constitutional lawyer.

  3. STOP BURNING FOOD!

I am an Obama supporter, but this is one area where John McCain is 100% right, and the American people have to stop Obama from implementing a disastrous corn-ethanol policy on America!

    Reasons:
    1) Corn ethanol often uses up MORE energy in the form of gasoline to produce it than it yields in fuel. This means that corn-based ethanol is MORE expensive and adds MORE carbon to our atmosphere.
    2) We are unfairly taxing efficient foreign ethanol, which is made from non-food sources and could be available at much lower prices, cutting our oil dependence.
    3) Global food prices have SKYROCKETED! Burning corn is like taking food out of the mouths of millions of already impoverished people around the world.
    4) Because corn-based ethanol is NOT competitive with other fuel sources, investing in it now is a huge WASTE of money. We should be investing in clean, renewable sources like solar!

Why are calling this a fuel when it actually COSTS us energy? Why is our government paying millions and millions to corral our energy economy into a dead end? WHY ARE WE BURNING FOOD?

  4. Bob L, Republicans don't flip-flop. They just flop-flop.

  5. As I've said before, for Republicans every day is Opposite Day.

by DaveW October 27th at 10:38AM
  6. We need a McCain supporter to explain this to us liberals. This appears to be a purely opportunistic political flip flop. Since we all know only liberals do that what are we missing here?
