John McCain's Bias Against John McCain
The Pew Research Center recently conducted a study of possible journalistic bias in 2008 presidential election coverage, and — as you might imagine — it stinks… for John McCain, specifically…
Slightly fewer than a third of the stories about Obama were negative, whereas more than a third were positive and about the same number were neutral or mixed. More than half of the stories about McCain cast him in a negative light, whereas fewer than 2 in 10 were positive, according to Pew Research Center's Project for Excellence in Journalism.
Wow. That's a lot of anti-McCain bias. And that's totally not fair. Totally, totally not fair. Not fair for the country. Not fair Republicans. And, mostly, not fair for McCain.
So, a bullshit journalist, I have to ask myself, Where is this bias coming from?
And, after searching tirelessly for nearly seven minutes (smoke break included), I found my answer on Politco. They wrote a long article with lots of theories and explanations and words — things I just can't wrap my head around — but this one little bit seems to be the money shot…
As it happens, McCain's campaign is going quite poorly and Obama's is going well. Imposing artificial balance on this reality would be a bias of its own.
And then it hit me: Oh yeah! It's because John McCain is running a shitty, shitty, shitty campaign. Politics aside, he's just not doing his job well. George Bush didn't have these issues four years ago. That's because Karl Rove — terrible as he is at driving policy — is fantastic at driving message. And now, John McCain's campaign can't even solidify a single message.
One might even be led to think that John McCain — what with his unvetted, inexperienced choice of VP; his omnipresent gaffes and mis-speakings; his dogged determination to use negative attacks; his late game decision to not allow the press access to him; and his poor performance in televised debates — that John McCain is throwing himself under the bus.

Oh, I already figured this one out. Do you want to know why it looks like the Republicans are throwing the election? It's because they are! The problems will be too hard to fix, so they are trying to hand it off to the Dems. They think they are being crafty, but I see through their ploy.
They are also, trying to make it harder on the Dems by adding another trillion in debt by the way of lining the pockets of their ultra rich friends with "bail-out money".
Of course he is intentionally blowing the campaign. No one could screw it up this bad by accident. It proves one thing though; he is still at his core a true patriot. No one knows better than McCain what a lousy president McCain would make.

An /excellent/ edition of Fresh Air on NPR this afternoon covered this /exact topic/!!! I forget the guest and couldn't listen to the whole thing, anyway. (Google it or go to NPR – you'll find it.)
Anyway, this guy just ran down all the twists and turns and multiple reinventions of the message and why they happened, and WHO was behind them. My take away message was: turns out, they knew they were scrooged from the very get, so their basic game plan was to pull out all the trickeration plays they could. A solid, straight ahead campaign loses, so they went for 'bold' in every move they made.
Seemingly, the final losing 'bold move' was the campaign's suspension during the initial economic crisis fallout. The campaign told the press pool, 'watch McCain, now you will see what a real leader he is as he leads us through these troubled times.' At which point, McCain essentially took a shit.
Exactly. The right thinks that to be fair and balance that the media has to have equal percentages on the reporting. But that's silly. A journalist has no professional obligation to let one candidate lie and make stuff up and not call them on it. PaulV, do you know that McCain pals around with known dictators and terrorists too. McCain had private meetings with Agusto Pinochet. He has also appeared many times on G. Gordon Liddy's radio show. Liddy plotted to firebomb the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C. and kidnap anti-war protest organizers.
