Well, this is cheerful news: Some jerkoffs at the University of Kentucky saw fit, in their infinite wisdom, to hang an effigy of Barack Obama from a tree on campus…
UK President Lee Todd, after a news conference Wednesday, said that UK police have notified federal authorities of the incident. Todd said a professor saw the effigy on the tree near the Rose Street parking garage across from the Mining and Minerals building this morning and called police. The professor then sent Todd an email notifying him of the incident…
Todd called the act "deplorable" and "abominal" and says that type of behavior is not tolerated on UK's campus.
"We've done many, many things to increase diversity," Todd said. "I know this is not a reflection of this institution."
No, just a reflection of the region.
But, to be fair, if you think that Southern redneck conservatives hold a monopoly on asshole behavior, think again…
If you notice, in neither case is it the ticket's white dude who's hanging. And, quite frankly, I'm offended by that.

This has nothing to with the region, or the institution. Being a UK student, I can tell you this isn't something that happens every day, and also that while very extreme it is an opinion. UK is just as politically diverse as any other major university. The opinions I hear on campus go from liberal to conservative and actually seems to be pretty 50/50.
For you to say a region, in this instance Lexington, Ky, caused this incident and reflects upon it is completely ignorant.
We live in a mass media world with political ads and campaigns thrown at us every time we turn around, just like the rest of the nation. We all get to have an opinion no matter what, even if stereotypes from the past (Rebels, the south, slavery, etc.) plague our region.
Illinois has a Post-Viability Abortion Ban in place. There's no need for Obama to add extra layers onto already pre-existing laws.
If there's a law that says you can't wear yellow, why would Obama want to sign a law that says you can't wear yellow on Sunday? It would in effect be unnecessary legislation. Sadly, hanging Obama in effigy isn't confined to the south, or red-states at all for that matter.
My current home state of Oregon (which is VERY blue according to all poll maps– it probably doesn't hurt that Michelle Obama's brother coaches the NCAA basketball team for one of the major universities) actually had the same hate-crime-ish issue:

Yes, I think all acts (including the Palin one) of hanging images of canidates are awful– and, perhaps more obviously, a bad idea– but you shouldn't *expect* it in one area versus another. Every area has people with bad judgement, every area has people with extreme political or social ideas, and every area has people who think they're funny when they're not…
