Jews Love Gays, Human Decency

POSTED BY: Dennis DiClaudio

As most Americans can probably agree, last Tuesday was a fantastic day in the on-going struggle for civil rights. Except for when it wasn't.

While the rest of the country was busy taking a huge step forward by electing a black president, that ultra-conservative state of California was busy stepping backwards and voting to amend their state constitution to take away gay people's right to get married. It figures. If there's one state that screams out "anti-gay," it's California. Can't you just see the people dancing in the streets of San Francisco after finding out that their hate-filled Proposition 8 passed.

There's been lots of blame going around for why Prop 8 passed, and a lot of it has landed firmly on the firm shoulders of religious organizations. After all the Mormons and James Dobson's Focus on the Family funneled millions of dollars into California (from their HQs outside the state). And the lack of support from many black churches certainly didn't help none.

However, there is one religious group that was definitely not to blame: the Jews

On Proposition 8, Jewish Angelinos voted 78 percent against the ban while only 8 percent supported the ban, according to the survey of 1,200 voters in 50 precincts. The remainder declined to respond. The Jews’ vote against the ban was the highest proportion of any ethnic or religious group.

78 percent? That's huge.

Wow! It's almost like Jewish people might have a feeling about what it's like to be marginalized and oppressed.

  1. There is one distinction that should be made. I can all but guarantee that the 78% that voted against it were not orthodox Jews. Orthodox Jews do NOT like gays one bit.

The Jews who voted know are almost assuredly conservative, reform, reconstructionist, etc…

  3. To keep tax-exempt status – religion is supposed to keep out of politics – don't think the Californians were offended by the $ amt. of a donation but by the discrimination.

  6. Am I missing something here? The linked article linked about the Mormons states that they funneled a grand total of $2,078.97 in an in-kind donation from their HQ outside the state.

  8. I agree! Jewish people really know how to look at an issue from the oppressed point of view and do the right thing! What I want to know is – did anyone poll the atheists & secular humanists? I bet we are right up there around 100% too!

  9. Yay, Jews! But I'll bet the Unitarian Universalists were 100%; they just don't usually notice us. (Except the wingnuts who are looking for a liberal, gay-loving church to shoot up).

  10. Thank you, thank you, thank you, so much to the Jewish Community for not contributing in this hatered, and helping to show decency to it's fellow men and women!
