New Old News: Vintage Daily Show – The Meaning of Shoes

POSTED BY: Dennis DiClaudio

Okay, so we were all kind of confused by that Iraqi shoe-throwing incident yesterday, but that's only because in our culture, when we throw a shoe at someone, it simply means "Get the fuck out of the way of the television, asshole! This is the part where Jamie Lee Curtis takes her shirt off!"

However, as evidenced by this Daily Show clip from way back in 2003 — just after we won the war in Iraq — in Middle Eastern culture, hitting people with shoes carries a lot more meaning…

  1. Bush is not a Christian. As Jesus said in Mathew chapter 15:8 This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.Bush uses Christianity to get elected and as a mask to do all his evil bidding. He is a war criminal and a coward. There are actually women fighting in combat and this spawn of satan sits at home with his two daughters.

  2. The whole shoe thing – bloody brilliant. I am sooo jealous I didn't think of doing this 6 years ago. I throw like a girl (maybe because I'm a girl?) But hey, it still would have been cool! If I knew how, I would set up a website where people could throw a virtual size 10 shoe at a virtual Bush for a dollar a throw. It would be great fun.
Then, as an act of solidarity, we could then take the proceeds and contribute them directly to Mr. al Zaidi's defense. I do not know how one would set up such a website, but if somebody out there can do it, I'll throw all the shoes I can afford – serious!

  3. The journalist only expressed what many of us in the Middle East feel towards the Bush clan. It is in our nature and culture to respect and protect our visitors, even if we disagree with them but the magnitude of crimes and sadness this man has brought on the region makes it impossible to do so.
Bush resorted to making jokes because he does not want to face it.
I pray for the safty of the journalist, especially w news coming out that he has been tortured and might face imprisonment for up to 15 yrs.
I hope President Obama realizes how wrong and unjust the US Middle East policies have been for ages.

  4. Damn! Bush is as good at dodging shoes as he is at the truth! Did you see how quick he ducked? Wow.

  6. God, you are a very creative girl. It's a very good idea to do something like that. Can you maybe post your idea on the Daily Show and Colbert Report forums? I am sure there will be somebody there who could organize such a thing. It would be cool if we would be able to help Mr. al zaidi (especially in such a humorous way :) ).

  7. USA the land of opportunitiy where George W. Bush can become President and Juan Williams poses as serious journalist telling that the iraqis should be grateful that so many US soldiers sacrified their lives to cause of liberation …….???

  8. The Borgen Project has informative statistics on addressing global poverty.

    $30 billion ends world hunger
$550 billion is the US Defense budget

This organization has the ability, resources, and policy-makers to suppress the threat of global poverty by enacting legislation here in the US, which is tied to the United Nation's Millennium Development Goals. Please support organizations such as The Borgen Project so that we may rid the world of poverty.
