Compare that map to the last presidential election results.
1) The only states that polled "above average religious" and voted Obama: Virginia, North Carolina, and Indiana. The other 14 went to McCain.
2) The only state that polled "average religious" and went to McCain was Nebraska. The other 7 went to Obama.
3) McCain took half of the states that polled “less religious.”
4) McCain took only one state that polled "least religious", Alaska.
You want to talk about a regional party. There is your region. The Republicans have moved so far to the right as religious conservatives that they have alienated almost everyone that doesn't view themselves as "above average religious." The majority of the states that were "less religious" and voted McCain were in the mountain west, have low population densities, and are heavily pro-gun.
