1)  The only states that polled &quot;above average religious&quot; and voted Obama:  Virginia, North Carolina, and Indiana.  The other 14 went to McCain.
2)  The only state that polled &quot;average religious&quot; and went to McCain was Nebraska.  The other 7 went to Obama.
3)  McCain took half of the states that polled “less religious.”
4)  McCain took only one state that polled &quot;least religious&quot;, Alaska.

You want to talk about a regional party.  There is your region.  The Republicans have moved so far to the right as religious conservatives that they have alienated almost everyone that doesn&#039;t view themselves as &quot;above average religious.&quot;  The majority of the states that were &quot;less religious&quot; and voted McCain were in the mountain west, have low population densities, and are heavily pro-gun.</description>
