House Passes Stimulus Bill, House Republicans Pass Wind

POSTED BY: Mary Phillips-Sandy

Annnnd it's official, the House of Representatives approved a $787 billion stimulus plan this afternoon, sending it up to the Senate for a vote that could happen in just a few hours.

So did an outbreak of bipartisanship infect stonewalling Republicans at the eleventh hour? What do you think?

The vote was 246 to 183, reflecting the Democrats’ considerable majority in the House and the Republicans’ deep dissatisfaction with the measure, whose estimated price tag has fluctuated daily and was finally placed at $787 billion on Friday. Not a single Republican voted in favor of the bill.

Not one single solitary Republican. Not a one! Party line, consider yourself toed.

Listen, I'm not saying this stimulus bill is perfect. It probably isn't. Maybe, if I were master of the universe, I'd have set up some provisions differently. Or maybe I would have pushed the "Avert Economic Crisis" button sooner, or at least not wandered around chortling about how gol' darn confusing the economy is while streams of largely unregulated toxic securities were flooding our financial system, while people with zero income and even fewer assets were being handed adjustable-rate mortgages simply because they existed.

What I am saying is, if this plan creates so much as one job, one single solitary job in their districts, rest assured: Republicans will immediately start explaining that their categorical refusal to vote for the stimulus was, in actuality, a way of showing support for the stimulus.

Either that or they'll find a way to prove that not passing the stimulus would have created even more jobs than passing it did. Hell, maybe they're right! Maybe if we just sat still and didn't do anything the magic robots would come in their spaceships and save our economy for us, by giving us all lucrative jobs as professional ice cream tasters (benefits included).

I guess we'll just never know.

  2. It guarentees I'll have a job for 2 years and hopefully means I'll be working 2 or 3 hours overtime a week instead of having hours cut.

  3. It sounds to me like you are in favor of passing of the bill. That would assume that you knew what was in it. What is scary to me is that the majority of the people who voted for it could not have personally read it and comprehended what was in it in such a short period of time :-( Why was it so important to pass it before anyone could read it and discuss what was in it. Why are you unconditionally in favor of something which you have never seen or reviewed?
Sounds like someone sitting in the voting booth reviewing a list of unknown names and voting for them based on their party affiliation. Sounds like madness or naivete.!

  4. I think this is a very funny article. Economies go through cycles and recession is part of the cycle. I read a good article on the history of cycles at
