Poll Finds Barack Obama to Be Popular, Unpopular

POSTED BY: Dennis DiClaudio

As Fox Nation has been gleefully reporting, a new Pew Report shows that Barack Obama "has the most polarized early job approval ratings of any president in the past four decades" with a 61 point difference between Democrats (88 percent) and Republicans (27 percent).

Andrew Sullivan responds

The percentage of Republicans approving of Obama at this point is almost identical to that approving of Clinton in 1993. And it seems obvious to me that this is not a reflection of the president, but of the opposition. Republicans are historically far more hostile to presidents of the opposite party than the Democrats.

And this year, as Obama clearly reached out, and as Fox/Limbaugh/Drudge went into near parodic outrage, it's clearer than ever who is responsible. Check out the Independent vote. That's what matters.

Approval amongst independent voters is at 57 percent, which is one point higher than George W. Bush's was at this time in his first term.

And, while we're on the subject, Republicans' approval of Bill Clinton in 1993 was at 26 percent — one point lower than for Obama.

If the vital importance of all this number crunching is lost on you, then good for you. You probably get it more than you think.
