Jon Stewart Nails Obama on Don't Ask Don't Tell

POSTED BY: Matt Tobey

On last night's Daily Show, Jon Stewart made a sharp observation about the absurdity of our leaders. Essentially, they will go to any length to protect us, including torture, unless it involves boys who like boys, because, you know, ew.

Jon continues the discussion with John Oliver after the jump.

The Daily Show airs Monday through Thursday at 11pm / 10c.

  1. "instant gratification"… Little do you realize the gay community has been fighting this law since it's inception. 15 years is hardly instant gratification; it hasn't happened soon enough.

You should read up on gay history a bit. Policies against them in the military started back in WWII (somewhere around 1942). During the fighting against NAZI Germany, the U.S. Military decided they didn't want gays enlisting and serving. They couldn't legally do so unless they were psychologically deficient. This is where the APA classifications came in (later redacted in the 70s). So once they could deem gay members unfit for service they were given blue discharge papers, some ended up serving in state-side labor camps. (From "Before Stonewall"; http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088782/)

Similar things happened in the UK, following WWII, 250,000 gay soldiers serving in the British military lost many of their rights.

It's funny how at times, countries can appear to stand for one thing, and at the same time practice what it is their fighting against, and decades later people don't even realize it ever happened.

  2. Everybody making excuses for Obama, that will lose political leverage, make too many enemies, etc. is on a slippery slope, right down to the point where there is no difference between him and Bush. Between his inaction on this other issues plus his reversals on Guantanamo, we are a lot closer to that point than most people seem to think.

  3. Great job, Jon.

Next time, nail him on extraordinary rendition, conveniently NOT BANNED in the famous Executive Order that closed Gitmo.

Do we really want to continue a policy that was wrongfully used to detain an American citizen without trial?

  4. The same as Bush? Obama will never be the same as Bush, unless he develops a learning disorder. Regardless of what he does, I respect that he at least has the capability to admit a mistake when he makes one, instead of making things worse by trying to cover it up. Also, I like listening to a president speak who doesn't sound like a complete moron, someone of which I don't have to be embarrassed.

  5. Women Unite
    Take on the Fight
    To Win

Women out number men, and to that end their voices and votes should count for more in any kind of Democracy. But then a curious one could ask, “ Why not?”

Why should good sane sound hard workingwomen cower down to man’s brutal ways of taking care of business?

Many men from our creation have followed the Beast of mankind into wars, crimes of illicit passion robbing women of their homes, children, possessions and their rights to life in all ways. And the brute force that is used against women today, throughout the world brings about tears to my Gods eyes. WHY? I believe that from the very onset of the creation of mankind Gods ultimate plan was for man and woman to become one in the act of procreation then raising and nurturing of their children to populate the earth for the Glory of our Creator.

And now the Beast of mankind those who have the Need for Greed desires to rob again our women of all their rights to life in all ways and to set back the clock of humankind history by 3 to 4 thousand years. The Beast is few in number yet they perceive to own the entire world. They have no reverence for women, children and the sanctity of a home.

Their view of humankind is as servants — in just one low class, remember when the pyramids were built in Egypt that is where these current Beast want to take again all humankind except the very few of them maybe 1 to 2 thousand who will be the rulers over all others. With the billions of servants having no voice no vote no rights to life in all ways and no bar of justice to protect against the Beast as they rule wrongly.

The Beast plan is by its inception flawed and the good in us will raise up to defeat the plan and them near term because near term all of them will stand trial for crimes against humankind and nature and the proof who is a party of these illicit actions is monumental.

Yet the need today is for Study because the fear that has been provoked in many has left some lifeless, listless and so full of depression the only hope is to get a clear vision of who the enemy real is and once done develop a core group plan for ridding them from our land.

The best near term Plan is Study. Once you see for yourself the hideous and devilish plan you will NOT need any more reinforcement to hard charge with your voices shouting out STOP THIS MADNESS. Once done the cowardly Beast of mankind will run and hide for they are few and we are many.

For study google David Rockefeller=neocon, blderberg, trilateral commission then study.

After that JOIN IN and work the work needed to bring a change for our Democracy that will once again empower all to have their voices heard and their votes counted.

The PLAN — We The People Advocates WTPA are providing the only HOPE in saving our great nation. So JOIN IN and ENLIST to serve with your VOICES being heard and your VOTES being counted and moved along to our lobby group in Washington DC to power push the peoples needs, wants and wishes in our cities, states and Federal Governments for all Americans to have the rights to life in all ways in equity adjudicated by the Bar of Justice. 8. Ok, can we PLEASE stop giving Obama a pass on everything he goes back on from the campaign trail? Can we please stop chalking it up to "well, bush was so bad its going to take time to fix things?" Obama can change this policy with nothing more than a pen – he is in charge of the military! Wise up people!

Or can you not imagine that a politician would say something to get elected, and then do something different once elected? I guess we don't have enough examples of that in our history for it to be a possible reason nothing is changing. Please.

  9. Obama can do things…give him some time….I am sure he will turn out to be a good President.

  10. President Obama has thus far lent himself to disappointment among his supporters, and I am one of those supporters and I don't intend to stop supporting him. But the don't ask don't tell kerfuffle is a classic example of how he's flat out done things in direct conflict with what he told us on the campaign trail.

Walter is right. Obama can change this policy with a penstroke, nothing more. No senate committees, no back room schmoozing. Why he's choosing not to do it is beyond me. I'm very glad Jon (Stephen too) is taking him to task for things like this.

I agree with others who stated that he's been in office for a very short time and still has time ahead of him to implement the things he's talked about but not yet accomplished. The final verdict regarding how well he walks the walk will come November 2012. Which, of course, means nothing since we're all going to die on 12/21/12 anyway.
