California Trying a Bit Too Hard to Prove How Not-Gay It Is

This is just so typical, California. Just so typical…
The California Supreme Court upheld a ban on same-sex marriage today, ratifying a decision made by voters last year that runs counter to a growing trend of states allowing the practice…
Today's decision, written by Chief Justice Ronald M. George for a 6-to-1 majority, said that same-sex couples still have the right to civil unions, which gives them the ability to "choose one's life partner and enter with that person into a committed, officially recognized, and protected family relationship that enjoys all of the constitutionally based incidents of marriage." But the justices said that the voters had clearly expressed their will to limit the formality of marriage to heterosexual couples.
You sure are going out of your way to prove what a big, strong, heterosexual, traditional-values state you are there, Golden State.
But, you know what? You're not fooling anyone.

Words can't express how pissed I am. I figured this is how it would turn out, but I hoped beyond hope that what was right would prevail over the homophobic bigots. Clearly I was wrong.
I think it's funny that the GLBT community can fight for their country, as long as they don't include the "gay" aspect of their lives. And, we can get "civilly unionized", so long as we don't call it marriage. Why are there so many rules? And, why is everyone still sitting back and accepting it!? I'm much happier living over here on the East Coast where we apparantly have more open-minded, accepting states. Good job, CA…
I'm a bit confused. So are they saying Gay couples can get married but aren't allowed to call it marriage basically? If we're going to go to that kind of distinction then the state should just make the term Civil Unions for everyone and let the officiaries decide if they want to Marry someone. Then all you need to do is find a person willing to marry you to whomever.
I know that sounds simplified and silly, but well… come on now.
Here's CNN's report on the CA Supreme Court decision:

Thomas Jefferson: "Bear in mind this sacred principle, that though the will of the majority is in all cases to prevail, that will, to be rightful, must be reasonable; that the minority possess their equal rights, which equal laws must protect, and to violate would be oppression."
Bite me, CA Justices – you're making my home state look bad..der…
