Election Day

We know that November 3, 2009 isn't a real Election Day. But still, we can all pretend. Right? Take a look at these six elections and let us know how much you care.

Let's All Pretend to Care About Science for a Minute

POSTED BY: Dennis DiClaudio

Hey, look who all of a sudden is very concerned about the possibility of the White House suppressing important scientific information…

Aw, Fox News. You're so cute. It's almost like you're a real news station.

Chris Mooney at The Intersection lays out the reality of the situation — and why this isn't the same thing as the last administration's anti-science agenda — better than I ever could…

The "war on science" argument that I made in my 2005 book crucially hinged on matters of scientific substance. Not only was the Bush administration interfering with science conducted at federal agencies, but moreover, the agency scientists were right, and the administration was wrong–or at least, the agency scientists had strong arguments that should have been taken very seriously.

That is not remotely what we have in the present case… [C]onservatives thought they had a real scandal on their hands. Problem is, they didn't pick a winner–Carlin's report is scientific hogwash. As I write: "Climate researcher Gavin Schmidt of NASA… has written a very devastating analysis of the claims made in Carlin's paper, calling it 'a ragbag collection of un-peer reviewed web pages, an unhealthy dose of sunstroke, a dash of astrology and more cherries than you can poke a cocktail stick at.' "

I'd recommend reading the whole thing. Before Obama's henchmen have this whole thing scrubbed from the Internet.

Update: For the record, I'm not in favor of any actual science being suppressed for political reasons. And if it turns out that's what the EPA was doing, I'll be very upset. But I have strong suspicions that this "suppressed" scientific report by an EPA economist is less legitimate skepticism and more Ben Stein/Pat Buchanan skepticism.

TPM has more.
