Sonia Sotomayor Isn't "Mainstream" Enough for Sen. Jeff Sessions

Judge Sonia Sotomayor's Supreme Court confirmation hearings are getting started right now, so the a.m. talk shows were filled with pundits trying to determine the all-important "tone" that will be taken throughout the day. Will Sen. Al Franken wear his Stuart Smalley sweater? Will Republicans be miffed or outraged or some combination thereof?

Let's ask Senator Jefferson Beauregard Sessions III, the anti-drug/not-anti-KKK gentleman from Alabama, what he thinks about the Judge and her qualifications…

"I think philosophically her statements indicate an approach to judging that is outside the mainstream," Sen. Jeff Sessions, senior Judiciary Committee Republican, said in a nationally broadcast interview.

And if there's one thing we need from our Supreme Court justices, it is the ability to think squarely within the mainstream, because otherwise we run the risk of having cases decided without the benefit of all-you-can-eat breadsticks, hilarious videos of cats climbing in boxes, the Jonas Brothers and those wacky contestants on The Real Desperate Loser Chefs of Dance Plus Eight.
