The University of Wyoming's Dick Cheney Center for International Students and Brain-Exploding Irony

When you think of a safe and nurturing set of arms lovingly outstretched for foreign-born young adults, it's pretty much impossible to escape the one most obvious correlation:

Former Vice President Dick Cheney

A decision by the University of Wyoming to name a new center for international students for former Vice President Dick Cheney is drawing criticism from people who say Cheney's support for the Iraq war and harsh interrogation techniques should disqualify him from the distinction…

The center is funded in part with $3.2 million the Cheneys donated to the university in several installments while he was vice president…

"We feel that by naming it the Cheney International Center, that the programs and UW can't avoid being identified with that ideology and that approach to global politics that the Bush-Cheney administration championed," Pelican said Tuesday.

Awesome! The new Cheney Center for International Students should really fill out the quad nicely, right alongside the university's excellent Lohan Center for Feminist Studies and the Vick Center for Veterinary Medicine.

At any rate, it's gotta be more popular than the old Cheney Center for International Students (his basement).

Proud of our VP September 25, 2009 at 10:16AM

To begin with, there were only about 100 people who were demonstrators at September 10th's event. The MAJORITY of people at UW were VERY happy to have such a large endowment given to Wyoming which everyone can benefit from. It irks me to read where students say things like, "Wow, I'm not going to tell anyone about my scholarship…" words to that effect. If someone doesn't agree with one's politics, then don't take the gift. It's as simple as that. Otherwise, that person is just speaking out one side of their mouth and being a hypocrite. It's amazing to read remarks made by individuals about that campaign, esp. when it came to 9-11 and the "mentality of Cheney about "bomb them before they bomb us. I know people who were there and the propaganda that is out there is simply ridiculous. They knew people who worked in the World Trade Center and I'm glad we retaliated after Al -Quaeda's people- they deserved every bit and more that they got! The stupidity that this generation has and networks like this is simply mind-boggling. Responsible reporting is no longer what it used to be. Whatever is on your agenda will come back to haunt all of you.

I'm going to UW and when I heard about this I almost cried.

I was at the protest against Dick Cheney this morning. His dirty money is not wanted here at the University. This 3.3 million just shows the price tag the University has for its integrity.

I was born and live in Wyoming, and I hate dick(except mine, well maybe mine a little). This guy is such an evil spud, I hope that this doesn't go through. They did a good job of keeping secret. The University of Wyoming needs to take a big enema to remove the current administration. Oh yeah the U.W's president's name is Buchanan. I used to be his son's friend(Buchanan's not dicks) Sorry about the rant I just don't want us to think all Wyomingites are republican or dicks. Same diff really.
