Congratulations, Singletons, You're More Engaged Than You Were Last Year
Ladies, it's that time of the month… time for us to be a highly desirable, easily generalized demographic!A new poll, conducted by Greenberg Quinlan Rosner and "Women's Voices, Women Vote Action Fund," shows that single women could be for the Democrats what evangelical voters were for the Republicans in the last presidential election.
Unmarried women voters make up more than a quarter of the electorate, and they tend to be Democrats, according to the poll, released Monday.
There's just one problem: a lot of single women don't bother to participate in the political process. This could be the result of work pressure, social commitments, hangovers, or, perhaps, the realization that "women's issues" constitute a short, marriage-and-child-centric list in most political analysis…
"They've gotten more excited about the election, you know, more engaged, but they don't see their issues being addressed," said Stan Greenberg, chairman and CEO of Greenberg Quinlan Rosner. "They are looking for pay equity to be addressed. Minimum wage, daycare, education, those are not issues that they've heard the candidates talk about."
Yeah, when my friends and I get together after work, we're always saying we need better daycare for the children we pay $30 a month not to have. And we're constantly worrying about the education these nonexistent children will receive. I mean, sure, there's a war going on and a recession and an environmental crisis and all that, but we single women keep our focus laser-sharp.
You sort of have to when you're earning 80 cents on the dollar.
