Hillary Clinton Fights Onwards, Sidewards
Hillary Clinton — the undisputed champion of last night's Pennsylvania primaries — woke up twenty minutes before she went to bed and made her well-deserved victory lap around the news shows…Mrs. Clinton made the rounds of the morning news programs on Wednesday, repeatedly invoking the mantra "the tide is turning" and vowing to keep up her campaign through the remaining nine contests.
She continued to frame her argument to the undecided super-delegates. "I won the states that we have to win — Ohio, now Pennsylvania," she said in an interview on CNN. "It's hard to imagine a Democrat getting to the White House without winning those states."
That is absolutely true. In a general election. Those were Democratic primary elections, so a Democrat was practically guaranteed to win those states. It could be that Senator Clinton is confused. This primary has been going on so long, I know it's hard to keep these things straight.
But, not to take anything away from Clinton, last night's victory was impressive, if not exactly a surprise. And it may be that she does have a new and strong wind behind her back. Similar victories in North Carolina (not likely) and Indiana (very possible) will go a long way toward proving that to the superdelegates. But they won't be easy…
Mrs. Clinton faces major challenges going forward: her campaign is essentially out of money, with unpaid bills piling up, and she faces growing frustration among some Democratic officials who would prefer her to end her campaign in recognition of Mr. Obama's lead in the overall popular vote of the primaries and caucuses so far, as well as his continuing edge toward amassing the 2,025 delegates needed to secure the nomination.
However, according to the Clinton camp…
"As of 11:30 p.m. tonight, we are at nearly $2.5 million since PA was called for HRC — 80% of that money is coming from new donors to the campaign. It’s our best night ever."
So, the race will go on! And it seems that the big winner here is me. For at least the next two weeks, I will not be wanting for ridiculous things to write about.
I have to give credit where credit is due: Hillary Clinton has provided job security in these difficult economic times.
