California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger giving the commencement address at Emory University yesterday…
"I was also going to give a graduation speech in Arizona this weekend. But with my accent, I was afraid they would try to deport me."
You know, hearing a conservative like Schwarzenegger speaking out against Arizona's recent decline into moral illness makes me think. The GOP doesn't have to be like this. This is not the party at its most healthy. This ugly, creeping, quiet racism is very much like a cancer metastasizing itself through certain tracts of the Republican soul. A hard, thoughtless abnormal growth of disinterest for one's fellow man. A neoplasm of small-minded, heartlessness if you will. On second thought, though, maybe I've taken this metaphor too far. Alright, I'm gonna take that back.
It's not a tumor.*
*Yikes! Sorry, that was a phenomenal amount of set-up for such a cheesy joke. I'm gonna go away and think about what I've done. But don't worry…
I'll be back.
