Remember "Change?" Remember "Hope?" How about "Yes We Can"? Feeling like we were at a pivotal moment in American history was a fun fad, right? Unfortunately, like Beanie Babies and Smash Mouth, their days are long gone.
Speaking at an "intimate" $35,800 per plate dinner, Obama laid out the landscape he'd be entering in the 2012 campaign.
"I've said this before — this election will not be as sexy as the first one," the president said. "Back then it was still fresh and new. I didn't have any gray hair. Everybody loved the 'Hope' posters and all that. This time it's — we've got to grind it out a little bit. We've got to grind it out. But the cause is the same. And my passion is the same. And my commitment is the same."
Why is he talking to us like a husband trying to convince his wife not to get a divorce? Is he practicing to deliver the world's worst renewed wedding vows?
To take the analogy further, back in 2008, we were young and hopeful. The nation was looking for a handsome young leader to charm us off our feet. But now we are a little older, wiser and slightly less desirable. All we are looking for is a dependable, boring older man to settle for. It's okay if it's obvious he's also settling for us, too.
