Last year, House Republicans mounted a so-called War on Women, attempting to defund Planned Parenthood, change the definition of rape and limit access to abortion. Just like the other two wars they started, it looks like this one's going to drag on for years…
House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) on Wednesday vowed that Congress would repeal an Obama administration regulation requiring employers, including religious organizations, to provide birth-control coverage in their employees’ health plans…
“In imposing this requirement, the federal government is violating a First Amendment right that has stood for more than two centuries. And it is doing so in a manner that affects millions of Americans and harms some of our nation’s most vital institutions.”
Exactly. Obama is totally infringing on the religious freedom of millions of Americans. Well, except that the new rule doesn't actually extend to churches and other places of worship and will be applied only to Catholic-owned secular institutions like hospitals and universities. And except that 28 states already have the same exact policy. Oh, and except that 99% of women have used birth control at one point in their lives. Except for all that, yeah, it's an outrageous attack on our liberty.
I guess it's not surprising that the GOP would side with the tiny fraction of women who oppose contraception. After all, they are the 1%. Still, Boehner's stiff opposition is puzzling. With a name like that, he should really have a better attitude toward sex.
