As a city that's suffered from every conceivable symptom of urban decline, Newark, NJ is no stranger to budget deficits, with this year's budget calling for another round of property tax increases and cuts in municipal services. But have no fear, Mayor Cory Booker has come upon a solution to fill the gaps in road maintenance, police coverage and fire protection: he will do all the work by his damn self.
Booker has already made headlines for giving chase to an armed robber in 2006 and helping to clear snow after a severe storm. Unfortunately, he'll have to take a small break from performing all municipal functions, because he was briefly hospitalized last night with smoke inhalation and second degree burns to his hand, after rescuing a woman from a burning building…
[Newark Fire Chief John] Centanni said the mayor executed a professional rescue and possibly saved the life of one resident.
After being released from the hospital, Booker recounted his experience at the fire and said he thought he might have to jump out of a window because of the heavy flames…
"I suddenly had the realization that I can't find this woman." Booker said. "I look behind me and see the flames and I think "I'm not going to get out of here. Suddenly I was at peace with the fact that I was going to jump out the window."
Then he heard her cries in a back bedroom.
"I just grabbed her and whipped her out of the bed," Booker said. The two made their way downstairs, where they both collapsed, Booker said.
It's all very impressive, and the woman is now listed in stable condition, but I can't help but think Governor Chris Christie could have berated the fire until it went out. Plus, we'd have a cool Youtube video to show for it.
