Good news, everyone! Turns out that Frank Szabo — a candidate for sheriff of New Hampshire's Hillsborough County — does not believe that the U.S. Constitution gives county sheriffs the right to shoot down doctors who attempt to give women legal and consented abortions…
In a written statement, Szabo today said he has reflected on the "unacceptable public comments" he made yesterday, and retracted the idea that he would use deadly force to stop an abortion doctor and apologized to the people of New Hampshire for so carelessly losing track of what he was saying.
Yes, that is an actual thing that was actually written about an actual sheriff candidate. Because — believe it or not –yesterday, Szabo actually for real no-kidding said this…
In an interview on Wednesday with local television station WMUR, Szabo said he believed sheriffs were granted special powers under the Constitution. That means, he said, he would be empowered to arrest or even use deadly force against doctors for providing legal abortions for women.
"I would hope that it wouldn't come to that, as with any situation where someone was in danger," Szabo said. "But again, specifically talking about elective abortions and late term abortions, that is an act that needs to be stopped."
Well, the important thing is that he did end up backing down from his pro-murdering-doctors stance. And all it took was a huge uproar and near-universal mockery. Seems like a reasonable person whom I would trust with my county's law enforcement.
