Rick Santorum vs. "Smart People"

You have to wonder if this guy isn't some kind of ingenious Andy Kaufman-esque performance artist…
Former presidential candidate Rick Santorum attacked the media and "smart people" for not being on the side of conservatives in a speech to the Values Voter Summit on Saturday.
"We will never have the media on our side, ever, in this country," Santorum, a former Pennsylvania senator, told the audience at the Omni Shoreham hotel. "We will never have the elite, smart people on our side."
Assuming Santorum is an on-the-level conservative earnestly complaining about "smart people" — which, by the way, is becoming less and less of an easy assumption to make — what is his end game? To drive "smart people" from the party altogether?
If that's the case, then perhaps he's more effective than we thought.
