• Barack Obama's Own Controversial "Redistribution" Tape

In response to the release of a tape showing Mitt Romney performing his best caricature of Mitt Romney, Republicans have returned to the time-tested refrain of look over there Barack Obama once said a thing.

What is this thing, which Obama once said, that the Drudge Report is now hawking and RNC Chairman Reince Priebus finds "telling?" It's a tape of an October 19, 1998 conference at Loyola University, in which Obama shows himself to be a centrist technocrat…

"The Chicago Housing Authority has not been a model of good policy making. Neither necessarily have been the Chicago Public Schools. What that means then is that as we try to resuscitate this notion that we're all in this thing together, leave nobody behind, we do have to be innovative and thinking what are the delivery systems that are actually effective and meet people where they live. And my suggestion, I guess would be that the trick, and this is one of the few areas where I think there are technical issues that have to be dealt with as opposed to just political issues. I think the trick is figuring out how do we structure government systems that pool resources and hence facilitate some redistribution because I actually believe in redistribution, at least at a certain level to make sure everybody's got a shot."

As Drudge says, "REVEALING!" In that it reveals 1) Drudge believes "The Chicago Housing Authority has not been a model of good policy making"  is some kind of liberal code for "kill whitey" and 2)  Obama has been the same infuriatingly wonkish, cautious Democrat for the past 15 years.

If only conservatives could find a more recent, more explicit version of the president's belief that the government should redistribute resources from the wealthy to the poor and middle-class…

"Many members of the other party believe that prosperity comes from the top down, so that if we spend trillions more on tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans, that that will somehow unleash jobs and economic growth…I disagree.  I think they're wrong. So that's why I believe it's time to let the tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans — folks like myself — to expire."

What a stunning revelation! Someone on the Republican side needs to hire this "whitehouse.gov" character to do opposition research for them. That place seems to have a whole archive of the president saying milquetoast things about the importance of government investment and a fair tax system.
