What Happened During the Fox News Audio Gap?
When asked about gun control during last night's deate, Mitt Romney was ready with a barely-sequitur of an answer about the importance of two-parent households: "But gosh to tell our kids that before they have babies, they ought to think about getting married to someone, that's a great idea." Or: Guns don't kill people, single moms kill people.
But that's not what you would have read in the Fox News transcript of the event…
Though NPR, Politico and CNN all managed to transcribe the entire exchange without a problem, Fox News didn't fill in the gap until the lapse was reported on Daily Kos and other liberal blogs. We can chalk this up to forgivable human error, but let's not forget that Fox was responsible for providing technical support for last night's debate. With no one allowed to tweet from inside the debate hall and Fox News cameras responsible for the feed, we can't trust the tape or the other transcripts; what really happened during these mysterious four minutes?* For one brief moment the debate devolved into a brawl that only Republican Senate candidate Linda McMahon could endorse.
* Romney: "Seamus? Yeah, he had it coming."
* Obama: "Jay-Z is alright, but my favorite band is Creed."
* Romney: "I prefer Nickelback."
Sometimes it's better that we remain in the dark about these things.
