Sarah Palin lasted longer as a Fox News contributor than she did as governor of Alaska, but that doesn't make her departure any any less painful for those of us who savored every mangled word that traveled from her lungs to her lips, without making so much as a pit stop near her brain.
At least we know that she was well-compensated for all the schadenfreude-y joy she brought to our lives.
According to the Smart Politics blog, Palin spoke 189,221 words on air during the course of her million dollar contract with Fox News, for an average pay rate of $15.85 per word. In other words, when Palin said:
* "First off, Nancy Pelosi is a dingbat," she earned $111. And,
* "Oh, Lord — what are we just a bunch of numbskulls out here in the heartland of America?" brought her $270! While,
* "My buddy Joe Biden has a penchant for making shhhhhh — stuff up," only earned her just $158. Half-assed swearing isn't gonna pay for those helicopter wolf-hunting vacations, Sarah. Finally,
* "Anthony Weiner from henceforth after his personal indiscretions were disclosed, he was going to rendered impotent, basically," was a dick joke that earned her another $270, of which she deserved every penny.
Considering Palin's entertainment value, these payments are clearly too low. But don't fret, if you only count the words that appear in dictionaries, she was paid at least $30 per utterance.
