WSJ: Don't Say Mitt Romney Lies, Because Hitler

Though Barack Obama hasn't overtly called Mitt Romney a liar for his most recent transformation from a severely conservative caterpillar to a centrist butterfly, his campaign has been adamant in pointing out Romney's inconsistencies. And the Wall Street Journal op-ed page will have none of it, because you know who else called people liars?

The Obama campaign's resurrection of "liar" as a political tool is odious because it has such a repellent pedigree. It dates to the sleazy world of fascist and totalitarian propaganda in the 1930s. It was part of the milieu of stooges, show trials and dupes. These were people willing to say anything to defeat their opposition. Denouncing people as liars was at the center of it. The idea was never to elevate political debate but to debauch it.

To keep things straight, it's important to remember a few guidelines for how the WSJ editorial page sees the world. Actual racism is non-existent, but accusations of racism are known as playing the race card. Actual lies are part and parcel of the democratic process, but accusations of lying make you Hitler.

On the bright side, Politifact is the least threatening version of the Gestapo the world has ever seen.

Rick Perry Calls President Obama a Nazi and/or British King

According to the immutable principles of Godwin’s law, "As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches 1."

Apparently, the rule also applies to presidential campaigns…

Texas Gov. Rick Perry today compared the GOP's quest to defeat President Barack Obama to one of the deadliest battles of the D-Day landings in Normandy in 1944.

"This election is about stopping a president of the United States and his administration that is abusing the Constitution of this country, that is putting America on a track to bankruptcy," Perry told a hotel ballroom packed with more than 200 volunteers.

"It is a powerful moment in Americans' history, and you are on the front lines," he added. "This is Concord. This is Omaha Beach. This is going up the hill realizing that the battle is worth winning."

If the GOP’s fight to unseat the President is like D-Day and the Battle of Concord, then that makes Obama both Hitler and King George III. Rick Perry probably would have picked a third figure, but there are no world leaders named "Oops."

Actually, Perry’s not too far off. I think we all remember from history class that time Hitler tried to give Germans universal health care and green energy options. Or the time King George oppressed his American subjects by trying to cut the payroll tax.

The proper analogy here isn't WWII or the Revolutionary War; it's Pearl Harbor. No, not that Pearl Harbor. I mean the gaffe Newt Gingrich made by comparing his inability to get on the Virginia ballot to the slaughter of thousands of American soldiers at Pearl Harbor. Perry should really quit while he's ahead behind and leave the garbled, hyperbolic historical analogies to a pro.
