Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, Republican Congressman Chris Lee Stepping Down Amidst Protests, Shirtless Photos

It seemed unlikely that they'd be able to hold out forever. I mean, ceaseless, blood-soaked, nation-wide protest and a shirtless beefcake self-portrait sent to an extra-marital Craigslist hook-up are two things notoriously hard for a politician to get past.

For weeks, political experts speculated on how long a national leader could go under such violent and tumultuous conditions. And for hours, people were, like, who is this congressperson guy, and how does he keep his stomach so flat at 46? What do you think he does, like, a bunch of crunches everyday?

Well, it's all over now…

Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak is to step down after 17 days of pro-democracy protests, two sources told NBC News on Thursday. Following an all-day meeting of the country's supreme military council, the army said all the protesters' demands would be met and a further statement was expected to be made later Thursday, clarifying the situation.

Three hours after his shirtless Craigslist antics appeared on this site, Rep. Chris Lee (R-NY) announced his resignation from the U.S. House of Representatives. Moments ago his office sent the following press release to the media…

"It has been a tremendous honor to serve the people of Western New York. I regret the harm that my actions have caused my family, my staff and my constituents. I deeply and sincerely apologize to them all. I have made profound mistakes and I promise to work as hard as I can to seek their forgiveness."

What's next for these two titans? Who knows? I mean, a 30-year and a 2-year stint as a dictator and as a family values congressperson and tough things to just walk away from. But I have a feeling they'll both land on their feet. They both seem go-getters to me.

And, clearly, neither has a problem with using a little muscle to get what they want.

"Mubarak, he's gone, one way or the other. He is not going to be the leader of Egypt. That's a given," Palin said. "So now the information needs to be gathered and understood as to who it will be that fills now the void in the government. Is it going to be the Muslim Brotherhood? We should not stand for that, or with that or by that. Any radical Islamists, no that is not who we should be supporting and standing by.

"So we need to find out who was behind all of the turmoil and the revolt and the protests so that good decisions can be made in terms of who we will stand by and support."

Immediately after this interview aired, Palin was deluged with tenure-track job offers from university Global Studies departments, including the ones at the three good Ivies.

No word yet on just when Our Lady of the Sacred Tundra will make the move to New Haven, Cambridge, or Princeton. We'll keep you posted.
