The Hidden Political Joke from Last Night's "Game of Thrones"
Everyone online keeps going on and on about that little dig at Mitt Romney's father — then-governor of Michigan and soon-to-be failed presidential candidate — from last night's episode of Mad Men…
Character Henry Francis, a Republican political aide who had worked for New York Gov. Nelson Rockefeller in previous seasons, is shown fielding a request for his new boss — strongly hinted to be New York City Mayor John Lindsay — to travel to Michigan to appear with then-Gov. George Romney.
"Well, tell Jim his honor's not going to Michigan. Because Romney's a clown and I don’t want him standing next to him," Francis responds.
…but why is nobody talking about the political dig that was embedded in last night's season premiere episode of Game of Thrones? Come on, don't tell me you didn't catch it either?
Okay, remember that part where all the characters have a medieval sensibility and live in a world full of extreme xenophobia and fear of the unknown and are all governed by genuine belief in the supernatural and superstition?
Seems like a pretty obvious reference to the modern day conservative movement to me.

Your Obligatory Barack Obama/Mad Men Mash-Up
We all knew this was going to happen. Even if you didn't know it consciously, I'm certain you knew it on an instinctual level. Like, I guarantee that you're not going to watch this and say, "I am completely surprised that this has happened." Much more likely, you will feel a small Mad Men/Obama shaped hole in soul being filled and then you will go about your day.
That said, this animation from William Rabbe for The Chris Matthews Show is actually pretty good…
I am very much looking forward to seeing Obama's floating travels through the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros next week.

Mad Men-ing the Political World
Last week, I got kind of excited to find out that both Barack Obama and John McCain are both big fans of Mad Men. Because I'm a huge dork. So, I used that as an excuse to play with AMC's Mad Men Yourself that all of your friends use to make their Facebook pics even though it's totally not cool anymore (here's mine).
Anyway, since that was so much fun and since the new season is starting this Sunday night, I thought to myself: Maybe instead of spending my whole afternoon reading a bunch of news stories that are going to make me want to punch myself in the face with toxic poison plant sap, I should just spend some time making Mad Men-esque images of a bunch of politicians and pundits.
And so I did. And here they are…

John McCain Is Also a Big Fan of Mad Men
Yesterday, I went to a lot of trouble — some people might say too much trouble — to point out that Barack Obama is apparently a fan of Mad Men, which might have seemed weird because, Huh? But, actually, I had two very good reasons for spending so much time on that post: 1) I am very excited for the 4th season of Mad Men which begins later this month, and 2) playing with that Mad Men Yourself thing on the AMC website is really fun! (I am a serious political commentator!)
So anyway, earlier today, I became aware of this article from a couple months ago about January Jones (Betty Draper) visiting Congress to talk about Japanese Sharking or something. And at the bottom of the article is this…
She also got a meeting with former presidential candidate John McCain, who tweeted afterward: "Great meeting and tour of the Capitol with January Jones, who is an advocate for sharks. I'm a huge fan of Mad Men!"
Now, President Obama is probably not a huge fan of John McCain these days. But, as we now know, he is a huge of Mad Men! These are the foundations of political comity. (This is a Comity Central website, after all.*)
