* A Politico reporter was suspended for making distasteful sensational remarks about a presidential candidate. Odd. Normally, they're given promotions.

Cory Booker Pulls Himself from the Political Fire He Started

A few years ago, the medical community's attention was drawn to the case of Oscar the cat, a resident of a Rhode Island nursing home who had a knack for predicting the deaths of elderly patients. According to the author of an article in the New England Journal of Medicine, Oscar curled up next to the beds of twenty five patients who soon passed away.

Yet one obvious explanation was missing from all the speculation. Maybe the cat wasn't psychic. Maybe the cat was the killer.

So it is with Newark Mayor Cory Booker. Perhaps he was in the right place at the right time when he helped chase down an armed robber in 2006. Perhaps Booker's neighbor was lucky that the mayor was there when her home was engulfed in flames.

Or perhaps Booker was the arsonist.

An additional piece of evidence bears out this shocking hypothesis. On Sunday, Booker set off a political firestorm when he equated the Obama campaign's broadsides against Mitt Romney's record at Bain Capital to conservative attacks on Barack Obama's relationship with Reverend Jeremiah Wright.

"I'm not about to sit here and indict private equity," you'd have heard Booker say if you'd  downloaded Indecision's Election Companion App for iPhone and iPad and followed our coverage of Meet the Press. "If you look at the totality of Bain Capital's record, it — they've done a lot to support businesses, to grow businesses. And this to me — I'm very uncomfortable."

"This kind of stuff is nauseating to me on both sides," added the guy who may want to run for governor of a state populated by thousands of financial industry workers. "Stop attacking private equity. Stop attacking Jeremiah Wright. This stuff has got to stop."

Now that he'd started the fire, it was time to extinguish it, which Booker attempted to do with a YouTube video explaining that he finds it "reasonable — and in fact I encourage it" for the Obama campaign to examine Romney's Bain record…

It wasn't quite a Romney-esque flip flop — Booker reiterated his "frustration" with negative campaigning. More like pulling his own political career from the flames he'd himself fanned.
