Limbaugh, Robertson and Maddow Make Hay of Haiti

Leaping on a major tragedy like this week's Haitian earthquake to push your own ideological agenda is the kind of thing you expect from villains like Lex Luthor or Dr. Doom or Rush Limbaugh or Pat Robertson. So, it's a little surprising and a lot disappointing to see Rachel Maddow joining their ranks. Maybe she came in contact with a symbiote.

Pat Robertson Backtracks on That "Haitians are Cursed" Remark, Sort Of

Yesterday Pat Robertson decided to contribute to the Haiti relief efforts by informing his viewers that once upon a time Haitians "swore a pact with the devil, true story," and ever since then they've "been cursed by one thing after the other." So, to end these problems, what Haiti really needs is "a great turning to God."

(Fun fact: what Haiti has needed all along was less crushing external debt and fewer occupations.)

Now someone at the Christian Broadcasting Network is doing damage control (for Pat, not Haiti)…

Dr. Robertson never stated that the earthquake was God's wrath. [Ed. note: Nope, he just said Haitians had sworn a pact with the devil and were cursed as a result -- totally separate concepts, if you don't think about it.] If you watch the entire video segment, Dr. Robertson's compassion for the people of Haiti is clear. He called for prayer for them. His humanitarian arm has been working to help thousands of people in Haiti over the last year, and they are currently launching a major relief and recovery effort to help the victims of this disaster.

Dr. Robertson's assholeian arm, meanwhile, will just keep on keepin' on.

The only thing that makes me feel more ill than that video is the thought of Robertson's glassy-eyed audience nodding solemnly along with him.
