Quote Unquote: A Bigger Tent
Republican strategist John Feehery on the current state of his party…
.
"We can have honest, open discussions about the future of the country without unnecessarily jabbing our fingers in the eyes of Hispanic voters, African-American voters, Asian voters."
.
I think, in the coming years, we're going to see Republican politicians internalizing this. I suspect that we'll see room being made for these voting blocs in the near future. And then all of them, working together, will find newer and less familiar ethnic groups to demonize.

Jeb Bush, Jr. — son of the former governor of Florida and grandson of George H.W. Bush — on the future of the Republican Party…
.
"We've got to be a kind of pro-science and pro-technology party."

Maine Republican Party Chairman Charlie Webster — who previously expressed concern over reports of black people voting — explains himself…

"There's nothing about me that would be discriminatory. I know black people. I play basketball every Sunday with a black guy. He's a great friend of mine."
.
Oh, well. There you go. I guess everybody had the wrong idea about him.

Quote Unquote: Twenty Republican Debates
Mitt Romney on the 2012 Republican primaries…
.
"We had twenty Republican debates, that was absolutely nuts, it opened us up to gaffes and to material that could be used against us in the general, and we were fighting these debates for a year, and the incumbent president just sat back and laughed."
.
Well, to be fair, everybody was laughing.

Quote Unquote: Blocking Secretary of State Rice
John McCain on congressional promises to block Rice from being appointed Secretary of State…
.
"I wonder why we are starting this new Congress with a protracted debate about a foregone conclusion. I can only conclude that we are doing this for no other reason than because of lingering bitterness over the outcome of the election."
.
Sorry, I wasn't clear. That was McCain eight years ago discussing Democratic efforts to block Condoleezza Rice. Not McCain's own efforts to block Susan Rice earlier today.
