Dan Savage was on The Countdown with Keith Olbermann (starting about three minutes into this clip), talking about the three-way intersection of the GOP's opposition to health care, misguided religious fervor and full-asshole total insanity…

.

At around the seven-minute mark, he hits what I think is the thesis statement of his argument…

"I really do think that the Michele Bachmanns of the world and the Glenn Becks of the world are actively and consciously, or subconsciously, trying to get — I'm just going to say it — trying to get the president killed.

That's why they're setting this up as kill or be killed arguments. 'He's gonna kill your grandma,' 'pull the plug on grandma,' 'death panels that little children have to go in front of.'"

In response, M.J. Rosenberg, over at TPMCafe, remembers Yitzhak Rabin, the former Prime Minister of Israel who was assassinated in 1995…

Democrats and the media should challenge any rightwing hint that sounds like a call to assassination. If that is not what they want, they should be forced to say it isn't.

Remember Rabin. First came the incitement (Netanyahu spoke at a rally where Rabin was portrayed as an Arab terrorist and as a Nazi). Then the religious nuts held ceremonies praying for Rabin's death. Finally, murder.

Asked about who she blamed for her husband's death, Leah Rabin said, "the right. They kept screaming he was selling out the country. Of course, I blame them."

Oh, well, that doesn't sound anything like what's happening at these town hall meetings. Whew! Everybody can just relax now, I guess.

* Accuses President Obama of being a fellow atheist who's too cowardly to admit it publicly

* Expresses his deep pride for initially and continually supportinghe U.S.'s invasion and occupation of Iraq

* Explains why he sought out people who would waterboard him, and how it's disingenuous to call it "simulated" drowning

* Admits that quitting smoking was even more unpleasant than getting waterboarded

* Hints at his plan to make God is Not Great as a funnier version of Bill Maher's Religulous

Try as I might, I just can't seem to figure out why Hitchens would doubt Barack Obama's much-professed Christian faith which just so happened to coincide nearly perfectly with the beginning of his political career.

Why would he be so jaded as that?

Well, it seems to be official. Barack Obama will be taking the Oath of Office on January 20, 2009, with his right hand planted firmly on the Bible owned by a man who neither believed in a personal god nor preferred the company of women in the bedroom.

That's right. He somehow managed to score the same Bible on which fellow Illinoisiate Abraham Lincoln was sworn in as president…

"President-elect Obama is deeply honored that the Library of Congress has made the Lincoln Bible available for use during his swearing-in," said Presidential Inaugural Committee Executive Director Emmett Beliveau.

"The President-elect is committed to holding an Inauguration that celebrates America's unity, and the use of this historic Bible will provide a powerful connection to our common past and common heritage."

Such a thumbing of the nose at all the good old fashioned family values on which this country was founded will almost certainly come as a blow to all the decent Americans who were hoping that anti-gay rights Christian Pastor Rick Warren's prayer at the inauguration was a signal to their ranks that he would be continuing the current administration's policy of coddling them.

No such luck. By deliberately choosing the Bible of Abraham Lincoln — a man who, if not an absolute homosexual, certainly had strong homosexual leanings, and who believed in neither the Bible nor a personal god — Obama seems to be giving aid and comfort to the enemies of American values.

The day seems to belong to the degenerate heathen sodomites.

Update: Reading through the comments to this post, it occurs to me that yet another tired old stereotype has now been laid to rest…

Liberals are no better at interpreting satire than conservatives are.

Cold, empty, meaningless universe bless America.
