Jeeze. I can't say that the prospect of taking over the role as Secretary of Commerce in the current economic environment would be on the top of my to-do list.

But getting yourself implicated in a pay-to-play scandal just to create an excuse to drop-out gracelessly seems a bit harsh…

The Cabinet that President-elect Barack Obama picked on a fast track has an unexpected opening, with New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, Obama's choice for commerce secretary, withdrawing under pressure of a federal investigation into how his political donors landed a lucrative transportation contract…

"I have concluded that the ongoing investigation also would have forced an untenable delay in the confirmation process," Richardson said in a statement. "Given the gravity of the economic situation the nation is facing, I could not in good conscience ask the president-elect and his administration to delay for one day the important work that needs to be done."…

Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs said he expected a new commerce secretary would be chosen soon but didn't have a timetable.

I imagine it's gonna take some time to find somebody with Richardson's unique qualifications willing to take that thankless job.

And, by that, I mean somebody willing to take that thankless job.

New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson has emerged as a "serious contender" to head the Commerce Department under President-elect Barack Obama, according to a Democratic official close to the proceedings…

Richardson spent 15 years in the U.S. House — from 1982 to 1997 — before being named by then President Bill Clinton as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. A year later Richardson became Secretary of Energy in the Clinton Cabinet.

I have no idea how any of that stuff makes him qualified "to foster, promote, and develop the foreign and domestic commerce." I'm guessing it doesn't.

But what I do know is that William Blaine "Bill" Richardson III is Hispanic (and how couldn't he be with a name like that?), and that makes him uniquely qualified to replace the current Secretary of Commerce, Carlos Miguel Gutierrez.

He also helps Barack Obama round out the United Colors of Benettonosity of his cabinet.

Time to cross Virginia's Democratic Governor Tim Kaine off the short list for Barack Obama's running mate.

The man has no chance of being elected to the second-highest office in the Free World because — and this is so obvious I almost feel foolish reporting it — his left eyebrow is inadequate.

According to Roll Call, the newspaper of Capitol Hill…

Kaine's brows — arched, wiggly and what most people remember from the Democrat's rebuttal to the State of the Union speech in 2006 — have become one of the chief objections from some pundits to Kaine taking a spot on the Democratic ticket.

News media in Kaine's home state couldn't agree more. The Hampton Roads Daily Press has published its "Top 10 Reasons Not To Choose Kaine," and topping the list — ahead of minimal name recognition and lack of foreign policy experience — was The Eyebrow.

While this news illuminates the obvious point that Tim Kaine must no longer be allowed around children — much less the White House — it raises problems for Obama as he searches for a running mate without a grotesque deformity.

Whether it's Bill Richardson and his creepy goatee or Hillary Clinton and her second X chromosome, most of Obama's VP options possess physical quirks even more distracting than the Senator's own ears.

This is not to say that John McCain has it much easier. Anyone taken a close look at Joe Lieberman's jowls recently?

As John McCain and Barack Obama get closer to picking their running mates, we're sure we know what's on their minds: "Which Batman villain matches most closely to the person I'm considering as my running mate?" After all, that's how presidential candidates have been picking vice presidents since 1939. Well, we thought we'd make it easy for them with this handy chart:

VPs for John McCain:

Mitt Romney = Two-Face
Romney's stances on the issues switch so much it's as if he's making ideological decisions based on coin flips. And you should see what his face looks like under the skin graft. Nothing but metal and wires.

Tim Pawlenty = Two-Face
Pawlenty had been rocking a mullet for a while, but now that he's getting close to being a contender, he cuts it off? Sounds pretty two-faced to us!

VPs for Barack Obama:

Mike Bloomberg = Two-Face
The self-made billionaire and NYC mayor is a Democrat turned Republican turned Independent. Plus, if the rumors of his adolescent womanizing are at least partially true, we assume he used to be taller than four-foot-eight and didn't talk like a cabaret singer.

Kathleen Sebelius = Two-Face
As the Democratic governor of a red state, she's had to pretend to hate things like gays and abortions in private while loving them in public. Plus, if she side-steps Hillary Clinton to become the first woman to win on a presidential ticket, expect to see donations to Hillary Clinton Supporters for Throwing Sulfuric Acid in Kathleen Sebelius' Face go through the roof.

Bill Richardson = Catwoman
So limber that cats in New Mexico are often described as, "lithe as a Richardson."

Join former United States Senate Pages Dylan and Ethan Ris as they bring you the dish on not just the presidential race but all the exciting triumphs and disgraces inside, outside, and below the Beltway!

Catching Up With A Loser! In our rush last week to profile failed presidential contender Duncan Hunter, we passed over the highly forgettable candidacy of Gov. Bill Richardson (D-NM) who dropped out on January 10, beating Hunter by more than two weeks in the loser-stakes!

From Day One, Richardson made it clear that he was not your average presidential contender. Among other things, he was:

* The first serious candidate to strongly resemble the Incredible Hulk.

* Experienced as a governor, congressman, ambassador, cabinet secretary, and critically acclaimed YouTube actor.

* Latino, and therefore able to converse with outgoing president George W. Bush in terrible, broken Spanish.

* Able to withstand the wrath of lesbian rocker Melissa Etheridge when stating that her homosexuality was a choice.

* The only candidate to perpetuate a flagrant lie about being a Major League Baseball player.

Yeah, about that last one… It turns out that while Richardson did play professional baseball (in the Cape Cod League), he misspoke ever so slightly when he repeatedly claimed in various speeches and biographies that he had been drafted by the Kansas City Athletics. After his lie was exposed, Richardson tackled the media firestorm like a 3 AM phone call, explaining:

"After being notified of the situation and after researching the matter… I came to the conclusion that I was not drafted by the A's."

Thanks for clearing that up, Governor! We hope you can share some of your research skills with fellow non-draftee Fidel Castro!

Richardson's presidential campaign enjoyed roughly the same success as his baseball career. Despite support from the powerful pro-cockfighting wing of the Democratic Party, he placed a dismal fourth in both the Iowa and New Hampshire primaries, leading pundits to name him "The Ernest 'Fritz' Hollings of 2008." (Or, in the case of James Carville, "The Judas Iscariot of 2008.")

For now Richardson remains the Governor of New Mexico, but the state's lackluster economy may inspire the voters to place him on waivers, at which point Richardson hopes he'll be picked up by the increasingly desperate Washington Nationals!

Oh, I do love the smell of veepstakes speculation in the morning. Today's grist for the pundit mill: it sounds like Barack Obama is considering John Edwards and Al Gore for the number two spot on his ticket…

A member of the Congressional Black Caucus who's met with Obama's vice-presidential screening team says she offered the names of former senators John Edwards and Sam Nunn — and was told they're on the list. Congresswoman Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick of Michigan says when she mentioned that Al Gore is her favorite, the two members of Obama's team smiled.

Now, if they had winked, Cheeks Kilpatrick would have understood that Jim Webb is on the list. Scratching their noses is the signal for Bill Richardson, and touching their right shoulders with their left hands is the sign for Wesley Clark. If they take off their hats and touch their heads, that means Obama should steal third.

It's a very sophisticated process, this veepstakes thing.

So it seems the wildly immature GOP is up to its old tricks again, and this time, their target is Hillary Clinton. Despite her impressive Pennsylvania win, it seems Republicans are still giving Hillary "the silent treatment."

When will this foolishness end? Haven't the Democrats endured enough?

First, the Republicans short-sheeted Joe Biden's bed. Then Bill Richardson fell for the "Prince Albert in a Can" prank call. Frankly, we're lucky no one at Obama headquarters lost an eye after opening several suspicious, but irresistibly delicious, cans of peanut brittle. The Democrats just can't take any more of this. It's time to take precautions.

And although Hillary Clinton did have to cancel several speaking engagements after suffering a negative reaction to a botched cootie shot, I'm sure she'll show those prankish Republicans she's made of tougher stuff!

After months and months and (seemingly) months of a protracted battle for the Democratic nomination, full of name-calling, finger pointing and shame-blaming, some people just can't let go of the idea of a supposed "dream" ticket, according to the New York Times…

"It would be great to see them on the same ticket — they had attracted so many new voters and so much excitement, it seems so obvious," said Sam Spencer, an uncommitted superdelegate from Maine. "Hillary would be the L.B.J. of 1960 — both served longer and had more experience, and L.B.J. was willing to take the vice presidency. And Obama would only come into his own more as vice president."

Oh, that would work out so beautifully for all those uncommitted superdelegates like Sam Spencer. It would be a perfect situation: Two powerhouse politicians on one ticket, two historic candidates, two huge fund raisers. And — most importantly — no need to make a decision.

All that stands in the way are a few pesky details — like the fact that Mr. Obama and Mrs. Clinton want to be done with each other, starting now.

No, really?

And that Mr. Clinton bitterly believes that the Obama camp has portrayed him as a brutish, race-baiting campaigner, according to two associates of Mr. Clinton. On top of that, Obama aides assert, Mrs. Clinton's baggage would damage Mr. Obama's image in a New York minute. And they also believe that the Clinton camp's negative tone seems a poor match for Mr. Hope.

Seriously, would anybody actually wish such a fate on either candidate? Can you imagine being handcuffed to a person with whom you just had a four-month argument… for four to eight years? And which one of them would be willing stick a pin in their head and deflate some of the ego to take second spot in a historic presidential administration?

But, you know, I guess weirder things have happened.

To be precise, aides for both candidates would not rule out the idea of a joint ticket — though it was hard to hear it through all the laughing.

But cheer up, Democrats. If McCain wins in November, we still have a chance to see a Biden/Richardson ticket in 2012.

New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, fresh off his endorsement of Barack Obama this week, suggested Sunday that Hillary Rodham Clinton should consider dropping out of the race if she trails in the delegate count and popular vote at the end of the primary process… "It shouldn't just be Bush-Clinton, Bush-Clinton, you know, what about the rest of us…" {Richardson said]. "It's important we bring in a new generation of leadership."

Richardson's thoughts have been echoed by many other political talking heads, with some even going so far as to suggest that Sen. Clinton should drop out and pull back on her attacks on her opponent should Sen. Obama end up winning the nomination at the Democratic convention in August and then the general election in November. Though, most also find it extremely unlikely that she will.

Barack Obama has had a rough two weeks. What could help him out of it? Hey, remember when Ted Kennedy endorsed him? That was great! And super effective. Maybe all he needs is another endorsement — way late in the game, I'm thinking. From someone like Ted Kennedy, but much less well known.

Gov. Bill Richardson of New Mexico, who sought to become the nations first Hispanic president this year, plans to endorse Senator Barack Obama for the Democratic nomination on Friday at a campaign event in Oregon.

Yeah, that's the ticket. What credentials on that guy! Ambassador to the UN, Governor of a state that more than 68% of Americans know about. Kinda ran for president, maybe once?

As the nations only Hispanic governor, Mr. Richardson could become a champion for Mr. Obama among Hispanic voters, who have been a key voting bloc for Mrs. Clinton in the primaries thus far. And his endorsement is also notable because he is a friend and admirer of Mrs. Clinton, and was widely viewed as a possible running mate for both her and for Mr. Obama.

Right on! A high-profile endorsement from a prominent member of a minority group that votes singularly for Hillary Clinton is just what Obama needs a mere TWO AND A HALF WEEKS after an important primary in a state where a disproportionate number of voters from that group reside!

Now if he could only snag the Doc Brown endorsement he could go back and win that thing!

At a staff meeting today, people were told that Richardson will not endorse Obama or Clinton — but release any supporters to whomever they prefer.

Most Richardson supporters are expected to choose to return — bleary-eyed, confused and traumatized — to their families.

Tonight, three Democratic presidential primary candidates — and four guys who are being allowed to stand on stage beside them — will debate pressing fatuities in the City of Brotherly Lust: Las Vegas! (Nevada, not Honduras.)

Now, you may have a candidate that you want to win the nomination, but do you actually think he'll win? You might believe in his or her message, but do you believe in his chances? Would you really being willing to put down a stack of your own money on, say, Kucinich? Dodd? Edwards?

It turns out there are a lot of people willing to push their chips toward a particular candidate — in the hopes of gaining financially if not civilly. Slate has been collecting data from several different presidential betting sites, and a quick look at the way the bets are shaking out is somewhat illuminating.

As of today…

People are willing to pay more than $70 (in the hopes of winning $100) on the chance that Hillary will win the nomination, but less than $20 to win the same money on Obama. Even though she's only polling about 10% higher than him. Apparently, many Obama supporters are smarter than they look.

Edwards is doing far worse, going for less than $6. That means that if you throw down under $60 today, you could walk away with $1,000 if Captain Haircut pulls an upset.

Al Gore's chances are going for $3.40, even though he's stated a bazillion times that he has no intentions of entering the race. That means that you could take $34, throw it out the window and have a better chance of actually hitting Al Gore on the sidewalk than you would of winning $1,000.

Dennis Kucinich is selling for 10 cents. Ten pennies! That's even less than Richardson, Dodd and Biden, who are all selling for less than a dollar. This is your Hail Mary bet. Put down $100 today, and never win $100,000 tomorrow.

And the Republicans?

This is a much more exciting table, with Giuliani going for more than $40, and Romney going for a little more than $30. (Although, to be fair, Romney threw down most of those bets himself.)

McCain is somewhere between $7 and $10 depending on the betting site. (If McCain does run away with the nomination, bettors are encouraged to donate their winnings to the gas fund for the Straight Talk Express.)

Ron Paul is selling for less than $8! What's wrong with you Pauliacs? Why aren't you throwing down crazy bets on your candidate to skew results? It's the same principle as an online poll, just with real, actual money. Get on it!

Uncle Fred Thompson, the next Ronald Reagan, savior of the Republican Party, is selling for less than both Paul and Huckabee — $8 or less. But, you know, whenever he wakes up, those prices are gonna skyrocket.
